The USS New York - Turn a Negative Into a Positive
Take a negative and turn it into a positive. This picture and story is true (I verified it on Snopes.com) and it is exactly the type of story this country needs right now."With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship, USS New York, has already made history. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center. It is the fifth in a new class of warship — designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft. Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship's bow section.
When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there.
"It was a spiritual moment for everybody there." Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up."
"It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."
The ship's motto? — 'Never Forget'

Dikembe Mutombo Opening $29 Million Hospital
Who says professional athletes don't have a heart? Dikembe does... Here is a story from HappyNews.com -- "Dikembe Mutombo will fulfill a lifelong dream soon, opening a hospital in the Congo named for his late mother.
The Houston Rockets center, who donated $15 million to the project, will open the doors to the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital and Research Center on Sept. 2. The 300-bed hospital will provide health care to people in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Mutombo was born.
'We were very close,' Mutombo said Monday in a telephone interview. 'To do something of this caliber in the name of your beloved mom, it will mean a lot not just to me but to the people of Congo.'
He created the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in 1997, the year his 64-year-old mother died. She was unable to get to the hospital because streets were closed due to civil unrest. His father, Samuel, was turned back from the hospital, just 10 minutes away.
'My mom played a big role, giving us all the tools to make us great human beings,' Mutombo said of his nine siblings. 'She did what moms are supposed to do — raise a child with a good understanding of life.'
The $29 million hospital and research center will include a pediatric wing, surgery suites and a women's center."

World Trade Center Movie Trailer
Why? Because they can't live in peace. They don't want to live in peace. They would rather continue to spread violence and hate than co-exist with the world. After the foiled terrorist plot this past week, it's apparent they are plotting and want to strike again. Congratulations to the British government for stopping them. Now, watch the trailer, remember the day and God bless us all!

Inspirational Quote from Dale Carnegie
To get your week started off right, I offer this quote from Dale Carnegie:
"Many people think that if they were only in some other place, or had some other job, they would be happy. Well, that is doubtful. So get as much happiness out of what you are doing as you can and don't put off being happy until some future date." – Dale Carnegie

Send a Personalized Thank You Postcard to a Serviceman Overseas
Have you seen the website, LetsSayThanks.com? Do you want to let our armed forces overseas know how much you appreciate their sacrifice? If so, you may want to visit the site. Here is what the website says about itself:
"The mission of Let's Say Thanks is to provide a way for individuals across the country to recognize U.S. troops stationed overseas. By submitting a message through this site you will send a free personalized postcard greeting to deployed servicemen and women.
The postcards, depicting patriotic scenes and hometown images, were selected from a pool of entries from children across the country.
All you have to do is click on your favorite design and either select the message that best expresses your sentiment or draft a personal note. The postcards are then printed on the Xerox iGen3® Digital Production Press and mailed in care packages by military support organization Give2TheTroops®.
To date, more than 12,000 postcards have been mailed to soldiers. With the launch of www.LetsSayThanks.com, more soldiers can expect to receive messages from home.
Xerox is committed to helping people across the nation express their gratitude to our troops overseas. The launch of this program is aimed at reminding them how much Americans appreciate their service.
After visiting the site, I definitely have a newfound respect for the Xerox company. To visit the site, go to Letssaythanks.com.

From MSNBC.com -- "Just weeks after his 60th birthday, President George W. Bush showed no signs of slowing down on Saturday, powering his mountain bike up steep hills in 100-degree heat and exhausting younger riders.
Confident that a U.N. resolution on southern Lebanon was essentially complete, Bush broke away from his ranchhouse for a spin around his 1,600-acre (647-hectare) Texas ranch, across single-track trails that he helped hack out of the dry, dusty environs.
While some of his Democratic critics have complained he spends too much time on his bike, Bush said the exercise helps him deal with the pressures of the presidency.
"Riding helps clear my head, helps me deal with the stresses of the job," a sweat-soaked Bush said after an hour-and-20-minute ride that shot his heart rate up to 177 beats per minute at the top of one climb."

Iraq Marks Two Years of Sovereignty, Progress
To watch the news these days, you'd think the entire Middle East is in shambles. While the war between Israel and Hezbollah is still raging, it's important to note that things in Iraq have been steadily improving no matter what you read or hear on the news...
"In the time it takes a child to sit up, talk, walk, laugh, Iraq has established a constitutionally based, permanent, democratic government with the votes of over 12 million citizens and the efforts of even more," U.S. Army Major General William Caldwell told journalists in a press briefing in Baghdad.
Caldwell said that in today’s Iraq, free society is growing, as illustrated by increased cell phone coverage from about 1.2 million Iraqis two years ago to 7.4 million today, and an increase in Internet subscribers from 73,000 to more than 200,000. Progress further is illustrated by Iraq’s embrace of more open media with more than 40 new television stations, more than 25 new radio stations and more than 100 new newspapers, added Caldwell
These and other indicators, show the "beginning of a new generation of Iraqis forged in strife but strong in will," he said.

Bush Jogs With Wounded Soldier
I found the following story on MSNBC.com. It's from back in June, and it is another story that supports the premise that once you make your mind up to do something, nothing can stop you except for yourself.
"President Bush took a jog Tuesday with a soldier who lost part of both legs in Iraq, following through on a bedside promise even the president had doubts about at the time.
Despite a slight drizzle, Bush and Staff Sgt. Christian Bagge took a slow jog around a spongy track that circles the White House’s South Lawn. About halfway through their approximately half-mile run, Bush and Bagge paused briefly for reporters.
"He ran the president into the ground, I might add," Bush said, as the two gripped hands in an emotional, lengthy shake. "But I’m proud of you. I’m proud of your strength, proud of your character."

Dog Alerts Family to House Fire
From HappyNews.com -- "A family's dog is being lauded as a heroine after waking an 8-year-old girl when a fire broke out at their home. Katarina Scholz jumped from her bed about 4 a.m. Thursday and followed her barking 2-year-old bull mastiff, Daisy, downstairs to alert the rest of the family, Suffolk County fire officials said.
The girl and her dog plus mom Teresa, dad Paul and brother Jake, 4, fled the home uninjured. Another brother, Paul Jr., 10, was sleeping over at a friend's house.
"Daisy is definitely going to get filet mignon for dinner, and Katarina can have as much ice cream as she wants,'' Teresa Scholz told Newsday. ''My husband always yelled at the dog for going in the flower beds, but now we're going to build one just for her. She deserves it."

You've Got Mail....For FREE
My how the mighty have fallen... For those of you who know me personally, you know that I spent almost two years as an advertising representative with AOL. It was a great job with wonderful benefits and compensation, but it was short-lived because the company changed it's focus every quarter. Back then, the big plus for AOL was it had over 20 million dial-up customers paying $24.95 a month. That's almost $500 million a month! But, since 2000, they have been losing customers by the thousands every month.
Well, it looks like they are changing their focus once again. Except, this time, it's a major change. They are doing away with their subscription fees. That's right... From now on, you can get an AOL account for free. They are going to go to an all advertising model. Time will only tell if it will keep them afloat, but the great news is this. In my opinion, the only good thing about AOL is the unforgettable, "You've Got Mail" when you check your email. Well, now you can hear it everyday for free if you'd like.
This page gives all the details.
Enjoy and have a great day!
