Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin On Saturday Night Live

This has been a long and stressful Presidential campaign for both the candidates and the voters. Today, I'd like to look at the lighter side of the campaign. Both John McCain and Sarah Palin helped open up Saturday Night Live this season. Here's a look at some of the skits they both participated in. As the old saying goes, "If you can't laugh at yourself, then who can you laugh at?" Enjoy these clips and don't forget to vote on Tuesday!

Who Is Joe The Plumber From Last Night's Presidential Debate

If you were watching the Presidential debate last night, you heard Joe the Plumber being mentioned by both candidates 23 times. So, who exactly is Joe? His name is Joe Wurzelbacher and Good Morning America interviewed him this morning. I agree with Joe when he says, "Why should you be taxed more for being successful."

Under Senator Obama's plan, anyone making over $250,000 a year would be taxed more than everyone else. In my opinion, that's not right. Just because you've worked hard and make more money than 95% of the American population, that doesn't mean you should have to pay more taxes. What do you think? Enjoy!

Fred Thompson's Speech At The RNC National Convention

If you missed it last night, here's Fred Thompson's speech from the Republican National Convention. He delivered a very emotional speech last night, and he had a couple of great one-liners. My favorite was around 4:10 into the video. If you don't have time to listen to it all right now, just fast forward to about 4:00 and listen. I think you'll get a kick out of what he said about Sarah Palin. Enjoy!

A Video Look At Sarah Palin - John McCain's New Running Mate

Sarah Palin.... John McCain dropped a bombshell today when he announced his running mate as Alaska's first female governor, Sarah Palin. Before today, I knew absolutely nothing about her. But, after watching her speech today in Dayton, OH where McCain introduced her to the world, I was impressed. Her speech seemed sincere, and I appreciated the fact she didn't take the opportunity to bash Obama and Biden, but rather talked about what she wants to help McCain do for the country.

After her speech, I started doing some searching online to find out more about her. (Wikipedia has a great bio of Palin) She finished second in the Miss Alaska pageant. She's a mother of five children and the wife of a union worker. Her youngest son was born just a few months ago, and he has Down's Syndrome. Her oldest son is in the U.S. Army and will be shipping off to Iraq in September. I'll feature a much more detailed look at Governor Palin in the coming days, but here are a few videos that give you a look at who she is and what she stands for. Until later, make it a great day!

On a side note, there's a great "conversation" going on over at Joel Comm's blog at JoelComm.com regarding this decision. As you know from my post from a couple of days ago, I'm a big fan of Joel's marketing expertise, but I am now even more a fan of the man himself after reading this post.

Getting To Know The Real John McCain

The other day, a friend emailed me an article from the WSJ.com entitled, Getting To Know John McCain. I found it to be a very interesting and enlightening article. Until I read this article, I really didn't know that much about Senator McCain other than he was a prisoner-of-war, and he's definitely more liberal than the average Republican. But, here are some of the interesting things I learned about him from this article:

Col. Bud Day, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, fighter pilot, Vietnam POW and roommate of John McCain at the Hanoi Hilton relayed this story about John McCain to the author:

Mr. Day relayed to me one of the stories Americans should hear. It involves what happened to him after escaping from a North Vietnamese prison during the war. When he was recaptured, a Vietnamese captor broke his arm and said, "I told you I would make you a cripple."

The break was designed to shatter Mr. Day's will. He had survived in prison on the hope that one day he would return to the United States and be able to fly again. To kill that hope, the Vietnamese left part of a bone sticking out of his arm, and put him in a misshapen cast. This was done so that the arm would heal at "a goofy angle," as Mr. Day explained. Had it done so, he never would have flown again.

But it didn't heal that way because of John McCain. Risking severe punishment, Messrs. McCain and Day collected pieces of bamboo in the prison courtyard to use as a splint. Mr. McCain put Mr. Day on the floor of their cell and, using his foot, jerked the broken bone into place. Then, using strips from the bandage on his own wounded leg and the bamboo, he put Mr. Day's splint in place.

Years later, Air Force surgeons examined Mr. Day and complimented the treatment he'd gotten from his captors. Mr. Day corrected them. It was Dr. McCain who deserved the credit. Mr. Day went on to fly again.

Later in the story:

Another McCain story, somewhat better known, is about the Vietnamese practice of torturing him by tying his head between his ankles with his arms behind him, and then leaving him for hours. The torture so badly busted up his shoulders that to this day Mr. McCain can't raise his arms over his head.

One night, a Vietnamese guard loosened his bonds, returning at the end of his watch to tighten them again so no one would notice. Shortly after, on Christmas Day, the same guard stood beside Mr. McCain in the prison yard and drew a cross in the sand before erasing it. Mr. McCain later said that when he returned to Vietnam for the first time after the war, the only person he really wanted to meet was that guard.

And, one other story:

For example, in 1991 Cindy McCain was visiting Mother Teresa's orphanage in Bangladesh when a dying infant was thrust into her hands. The orphanage could not provide the medical care needed to save her life, so Mrs. McCain brought the child home to America with her. She was met at the airport by her husband, who asked what all this was about.

Mrs. McCain replied that the child desperately needed surgery and years of rehabilitation. "I hope she can stay with us," she told her husband. Mr. McCain agreed. Today that child is their teenage daughter Bridget.

I was aware of this story. What I did not know, and what I learned from Doris, is that there was a second infant Mrs. McCain brought back. She ended up being adopted by a young McCain aide and his wife.

"We were called at midnight by Cindy," Wes Gullett remembers, and "five days later we met our new daughter Nicki at the L.A. airport wearing the only clothing Cindy could find on the trip back, a 7-Up T-shirt she bought in the Bangkok airport." Today, Nicki is a high school sophomore. Mr. Gullett told me, "I never saw a hospital bill" for her care.

To read this story in it's entirety, please visit this page on WSJ.com.

Also, if you'd like to read another story written by a P.O.W. who was in the same prison as John McCain, visit this page on WSJ.com. It's definitely worth the read.

I'm posting this article today not necessarily to influence you to vote for John McCain for President, but rather to give you some insight into his character and resolve. It appears that the election will be between McCain and Senator Obama. Both men have a lot of strengths and weaknesses. And, as in most Presidential elections, the deciding factor many times comes down to character. Who has the stronger character? I'll let you decide.

Make it a great day!

Barack Obama Is A Distant Relative Of General Robert E. Lee

Researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society did a study on the three candidates for President, and there are some very interesting findings. Among them:

Obama has a prolific presidential lineage that features Democrats and Republicans. His distant cousins include President George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman and James Madison. Other Obama cousins include Vice President Dick Cheney, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and Civil War General Robert E. Lee, and he's also related to Brad Pitt. I'll give him credit, that's a pretty impressive blood line...

Clinton, who is of French-Canadian descent on her mother's side, is a distant cousin of singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette and actress Angelina Jolie. She's also
distant cousins with beatnik author Jack Kerouac and Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles of England.

McCain, whose lineage was harder to trace because of poor record-keeping is a sixth cousin of first lady Laura Bush.

Alternate Careers, Favorite Foods, Favorite Reality Shows and Much More About The 2008 Presidential Candidates

Did you know that former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee would be playing bass guitar for a traveling rock band if he wasn't running for President, and Fred Thompson's most prized possession is his "trophy wife".

What do the candidates like to cook? Don't expect gourmet meals from this bunch:

DEMOCRATS

Clinton: ''I'm a lousy cook, but I make pretty good soft scrambled eggs.''

Edwards: Hamburgers.

Obama: Chili.

Richardson: Diet milkshake. (Huh?)

REPUBLICANS

Giuliani: Hamburgers or steak on the grill.

Huckabee: Ribeye steak on the grill.

McCain: Baby-back ribs.

Romney: Hot dog.

And, the only thing that Hilary Clinton and Mitt Romney will probably ever agree on is they both like American Idol...

To see what the other candidates like to watch on TV and find out much more about their personal lives, go to this page on HappyNews.com. Guess whose nickname was Bird Legs?

Make it a great day!
