Do Pretty People Earn More?

Here's one more reason to get in better shape and look your very best in 2007 -- You'll earn more money at work! At least that is what this article on MSN.com found. Here is an excerpt from the article:

"Good looks can have a real impact on workers' bank accounts, according to research by Daniel Hamermesh and Jeff Biddle published in the Journal of Labor Economics. Attractive people earn about 5 percent more in hourly pay than their average-looking colleagues, who in turn earn 9 percent more per hour than the plainest-looking workers.

This means if an average-looking person earned $40,000, their prettiest co-workers would make $42,000 while their least attractive colleagues brought home just $36,400."

In my experience, this hasn't always been the case. I mean, if it was, I'd be the CEO since I'm so good-looking... Oh, sorry, I digress...

Seriously, I still believe that people are promoted more for their potential and performance than their looks, but it certainly doesn't hurt to make sure you look your best at all times.

Good luck and make it a great day!

Weimaraner Rescue of the South

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are having an enjoyable holiday season. The new year is almost here, and what better way to prepare for the new year than getting into the spirit and habit of giving. A good friend of mine is a volunteer for Weimaraner Rescue of the South.

Here is how the organization describes itself: "Weimaraner Rescue of the South takes in dogs who are in need of a new home for many reasons. Most dogs come to us from shelters where the family pet was surrendered. Their families simply were not willing or able to commit the time needed to train and care for a Weim properly.

Other dogs have been abandoned, starved, injured, or abused and ended up in our hands because the dog was picked up by authorities for animal cruelty, or found running loose along a busy road."

They have a very moving and inspirational video on the homepage of their site located at www.weimrescue.com. If you do nothing else today, I want you to visit their homepage and watch this video. If it doesn't affect you, you aren't human. These dogs need our help and support, and Weimaraner Rescue of the South is doing it. If you live in Alabama or Mississippi or parts of Georgia, Tennessee or Louisiana and would like to volunteer with them, please visit this page on their site. If you don't live in one of these states or if you want to donate to their awesome cause, you can online on this page on their website.

If everyone will contribute a little, we'll all contribute a lot. God bless you and have a wonderful day!

Good Samaritan Makes Up for Stolen Bikes

Here is a story that will remind us all of the true meaning of Christmas. It comes from HappyNews.com.

"When the bikes Dennis and Tamie Leporin bought themselves for Christmas to ride with their young son disappeared from their front lawn, the couple posted a sign to let the thieves know their disappointment.

"I hope U crooks enjoy our bikes U stole; Merry X-Mas," the sign read.

The next evening the couple heard a knock at their door and found an envelope with $200 inside. A pickup truck was driving away.

"Inside was a note that read, 'For every crook, there are 1,000 good people'," Dennis Leporin told the Pensacola News Journal.

"I thought it was awesome. We moved here from St. Louis, and folks just don't do that in St. Louis," he said.

Tamie Leporin said she and her husband were concentrating so much on the theft that they forgot about the true meaning of Christmas, until they were reminded by the kindness of strangers.

"We just wish there was some way we could thank them," she said."

I love his statement that for every crook, there are 1,000 good people. How true that statement is. It's one reason I started this blog. If you watch the news, you'd think that everything going on these days is negative, but if you really look around, you'll find positive things happening all around us.

Good luck today and make it a great one!

You can read how she has overcome a son's suicide, two husband's deaths and losing all of her money. Read the story on this page on HappyNews.com.

AP Poll Shows Santa Is Enduring

Santa lives on....

This story comes courtesy of HappyNews.com --

"Santa has lots going against him _ school-yard rumors, older brothers who think they know the deal and tattle to the young ones, errant price tags, the tell-all Internet and so many Made in China labels it seems the North Pole has outsourced to Asia.

Humbuggers everywhere. But no worries. It's a wonderful life for Santa.

An AP-AOL News poll finds him to be an enduring giant in the lives of Americans.

Fully 86 percent in the poll believed in Santa as a child. And despite the multiethnic nature of the country, more than 60 percent of those with children at home consider Santa important in their holiday celebrations now.

That's an approval rating President Bush and most in Congress could only dream about these days. (If Santa were a politician, Catholics and the nonreligious would be his base.)"

Yahoo Members Share Their Random Acts Of Kindness

Continuing with the theme of random acts of kindness, Yahoo asked it's members to share their random acts. You can read them on this page on Yahoo.com. Some of the acts they shared:

  • Paid the bill for a group of soldiers (obvious by uniform).
  • Mowed my neighbors lawn when he was in hospital.
  • Left a waiter a 100% tip.
These are just a few of the acts they shared. What can you do today?

Secret Santa Gives Bus Riders Early Christmas Present

Here's a great story to get you in the Christmas spirit...

From Yahoo.com -- "A woman hopped aboard buses, greeted passengers with "Merry Christmas" and handed each an envelope containing a card and a $50 bill before stepping off and repeating the process on another bus.

She did it so quickly that descriptions of the woman varied among surprised Spokane Transit Authority passengers on several routes Thursday, The Spokesman-Review newspaper reported Friday.

"She kind of kept her head down. I don't remember ever seeing this lady before," said bus driver Max Clemons.

"I had a young man in the back of the bus. He looked like he was going to start crying. He said in broken English, 'She don't know how much this will mean to me at Christmas,'" Clemons said."

I'd like to challenge you to do the same thing. I wrote a post almost a year ago that focused on giving and doing something for someone else. Read it again and it might give you some ideas of how you can help someone during the holidays, or better yet, any day of the year.

Good luck and make it a great day!

'Hibernating' Man Survives For 3 Weeks

From the AP -- "A man who went missing in western Japan survived in near-freezing weather without food and water for over three weeks by falling into a state similar to hibernation, doctors said.

Mitsutaka Uchikoshi had almost no pulse, his organs had all but shut down and his body temperature was 71 degrees Fahrenheit when he was discovered on Rokko mountain in late October, said doctors who treated him at the nearby Kobe City General Hospital. He had been missing for 24 days.

"(Uchikoshi) fell into a state similar to hibernation and many of his organs slowed, but his brain was protected," said Dr. Shinichi Sato, head of the hospital's emergency unit. "I believe his brain capacity has recovered 100 percent."

Dog Saves World Champion Adventure Athlete's Life

This is a great story for the holidays and especially for dog lovers. I watched a segment about this rescue on one of the morning shows a couple of days ago. This story comes courtesy of the Rocky Mountain News --

"A prominent Colorado adventure athlete can thank her dog and a Utah search-and-rescue team for saving her life after she fell and injured herself while running and spent two nights in subfreezing weather near Moab last week."

"The two-time adventure racing world champion and elite triathlete, trail runner and mountain biker slipped on a patch of ice on Hurrah Pass and tumbled off three successive rock faces of 10 to 20 feet each."

"After the fall, Ballengee crawled about a quarter-mile on her hands and knees to try to find help.

During the night, she did sit-ups and kept her upper body moving to keep warm. She drank snowmelt from a puddle when the water in her hydration pack ran out and ate two packets of raspberry energy gel she had carried on the run."

"Moab police found Ballengee's pickup truck at the Amasa Back trailhead at 12:30 p.m. Friday. As search-and-rescue personnel arrived, a dog matching the description of Taz was seen running around the trailhead.

"We were going to try to identify the dog, but the dog basically didn't want to be caught and instead turned around and headed back toward the trail," said Curt Brewer, chief deputy with the Grand County Sheriff's Office.

"When that happened, the search crew decided to follow the dog. And the dog took our rescue personnel right to her."

Serious Use For Silly String

I thought this was a pretty cool article. It's neat to find out things like this. Without knowing this, it would be pretty strange to see a Marine in Iraq with a can of silly string strapped to his belt. Now we know...

From Yahoo.com -- "In an age of multimillion-dollar high-tech weapons systems, sometimes it's the simplest ideas that can save lives. Which is why a New Jersey mother is organizing a drive to send cans of Silly String to Iraq.

American troops use the stuff to detect trip wires around bombs, as Marcelle Shriver learned from her son, a soldier in Iraq.

Before entering a building, troops squirt the plastic goo, which can shoot strands about 10 to 12 feet, across the room. If it falls to the ground, no trip wires. If it hangs in the air, they know they have a problem. The wires are otherwise nearly invisible."

"In other cases of battlefield improvisation in Iraq, U.S. soldiers have bolted scrap metal to Humvees in what has come to be known as "Hillybilly Armor." Medics use tampons to plug bullet holes in the wounded until they can be patched up.

Also, soldiers put condoms and rubber bands around their rifle muzzles to keep out sand. And troops have welded old bulletproof windshields to the tops of Humvees to give gunners extra protection. They have dubbed it "Pope's glass" — a reference to the barriers that protect the pontiff."

The New Senate Millionaires

I think you'll all find this very interesting reading. Forbes.com has a piece on how many millionaires there are in the upcoming Senate. Here are a couple of examples from the piece:

"Bob Corker, senator-elect from Tennessee, boasts an estimated $64 million to $236 million fortune, according to the financial disclosure he filed to the Senate. Claire McCaskill, the senator-to-be from Missouri, has a portfolio worth roughly $13 million to $29 million."

"All told, at least half of the ten men and women joining the Senate next year are millionaires, with Corker and McCaskill shoo-ins to number among the ten richest senators. That rarefied club includes Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who Roll Call newspaper ranks as the richest senator, with an estimated net worth of $750 million. Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wisc., comes in second, with an estimated fortune of $243.15 million."

Rocky Lives To Fight One More Day

Are you ready for one last Rocky flick? If so, you'll enjoy this piece I read on HappyNews.com.

"Sylvester Stallone isn't pulling any punches this time: Rocky Balboa is going out like a champ.

After "Rocky V" left Stallone feeling as if the movie series had hit the canvas, he loves the way the latest — and final — film allows some cinematic closure for the gritty Philly fighter.

"I wasn't happy with the fifth one," Stallone said Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field where the Eagles played Carolina. "I think this one is real satisfying for the people who like Rocky."

Stallone said this movie shows an older Rocky, who is reluctant to get back in the ring but ends up fighting just to compete, not necessarily to win. Old pal Paulie is back, but Rocky's been growing apart from his son. One crucial character does not return, though somehow she still gives The Italian Stallion the added inspiration to fight for the title one more time.

No Adrian!"

Dog Tunnels Through Snow To Save Owners

Wow! What a story. Rather than paraphrase it, here is the entire story from WBIR.com:

"A seven year old German Shepherd - Timberwolf mixed dog named Shana is quite a canine hero in Alden as the story spreads of her efforts to save her owners during the October surprise storm.

Eve and Norman Fertig, who are both 81 years old, were out treating injured birds in the Wildlife Sanctuary on their Alden property on the night of October 12th. They left as the storm intensified but, were soon trapped by falling trees and heavy snow as they tried to walk back to their home. Eve realized they could die in the bitter cold but, fortunately, Shana was with them.

As the cold and snow chilled them both without heavy coats and gloves, Shana started digging under the snow and trees.

The dog actually dug a foot wide tunnel about 20 feet to the home.

Shana barked but, the couple hesitated, so they say the dog came back and tugged on Eve's jacket. She says the 160 pound dog actually pulled her onto its broad back and crawled through the tunnel. Her husband held on as well as they slowly crawled all the way back to their home. They made it back to the back deck, opened their door and fell in to the house exhausted but safe.

Give that dog a bone indeed!

Good luck and make it a great day!

The Third Howl at Theatre Decatur

Hello all,

If you live in the Atlanta area and are looking for something to do over the holidays, I'd like to suggest The Third Howl, which is playing at Theatre Decatur Thursday - Sunday thru December 17th. It's a witty musical play that both kids and adults will like. My wife and I went this past Sunday. We really enjoyed it, and the theatre could use your support. For more information about Theatre Decatur, visit their website, www.theatredecatur.com.

While we were there, they were having a fund-raiser for PAWS Atlanta, which is a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats in the Atlanta area. If you're thinking about adopting a pet, please visit their website at www.pawsatlanta.org. And, if you're one of my readers from outside of Atlanta, visit www.petfinder.com to locate a shelter near you.

Good luck and make it a great day!

The High Life at Low Cost

I found a great article today on MSN.com. It's courtesy of Men's Health magazine, and it's an article that gives you tips on how to live the high life while not breaking your personal bank account.

Here are some highlights from the article:

Instead of buying the hottest and most expensive "new" sports or luxury car, consider buying an older car from a top manufacturer. You'll still get all the looks, but at a considerable discount. They list a BMW 328ie series from the late 1990's or a Jaguar XJ8 series from the same period. The point being no one knows that you just bought the car.

Another example from the article regards Wine. Here is the excerpt from the article:

"Wine worth savoring shouldn't sap your savings. "You just have to find new regions and undiscovered wines," says Paul Lang, owner of New York City wine-events group A Casa. "As soon as something is covered by the media, the prices skyrocket." Beat the hoards by trolling wine blogs -- we like corkjester.com and vinography.com -- for under-the-radar picks, and by cultivating a relationship with your local provider. You're looking for three things: First, unexpected home runs. "You might not think to pick up a wine from Greece or Uruguay, which is exactly why you should," says Jeffery Lindenmuth, owner of PAWinePicks.com. Second, up-and-coming hot spots. "Focus your gaze on emerging regions," says Joshua Wesson, chairman and executive wine director of Best Cellars. Spanish wines have buzz, but avoid the already-hot Rioja region and concentrate on nearby La Mancha, Jumilla, and Toro, for example.

And third, trickle-down quality. Pick up a second-label wine from a solid producer -- like Hawk Crest instead of the more expensive Stag's Leap, from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, in Napa, California. "Wineries create these brands to use up the grapes that aren't quite good enough for their best wines," says Lindenmuth. "They're an especially great buy in the best years, when an abundance of fantastic grapes carries over into the lower-priced wines."

The article also covers travel tips, restaurant tips, flower tips, and a few other gems. Visit this page on MSN.com to read the entire article. I think you'll enjoy it.

Good luck and make it a great day!
