U.S.A. Gold Medal Winners As Of Tuesday, August 19, 2008


While watching the U.S.A. women's rowing team win gold in Beijing a couple of days ago, the announcer said something that really made me think how special the awards ceremony is to most Olympic athletes. For most Olympic athletes, they train for years upon years for one shot at Olympic gold. And, with the exception of basketball, beach volleyball, tennis, swimming and a few other sports where the athletes are all well-known sports celebrities, most Olympic athletes train in relative obscurity and are unknown to the world until they compete at the Olympics.

Therefore, it's really special watching someone like the women's rowing team win gold. It's the purest form of athletic joy in the world. They've trained their whole lives for literally one shot at glory. And, when that training manifests itself with a gold medal, one can only imagine the sense of accomplishment and pride these athletes feel.
