Google Maps

Have you tried Google Maps yet? If you haven't, you've got to check it out. Go to maps.google.com. In the search box up top, type in your city. Then, on the map that shows up, click on the Hybrid link. Now, you will have a satellite view of your city and you can zoom down until you are over your neighborhood. It's a really cool tool, especially if you would like to learn more about the areas surrounding your home, etc. Just thought you'd all enjoy it.

Good luck and make it a great day!

Twenty-One Memos From Your Child

From HappyNews.com -- Whether you have any children or not, we can all learn from these 21 memos from a child:

1. Don't spoil me. I know quite well that I ought not have all I ask for. I am only testing you.

2. Don't be afraid to be firm with me. I prefer it, it makes me feel secure.

3. Don't let me form bad habits. I have to rely on you to detect them in the early stages.

4. Don't make me feel smaller than I am. It only makes me behave stupidly "big".

5. Don't correct me in front of people if you can help it. I'll take much more notice if you talk quietly with me in private.

6. Don't make me feel all of my mistakes are sins. It upsets my sense of values.

7. Don't protect me from consequences. I need to learn the painful way, sometimes.

8. Don't be upset when I say "I hate you". It isn't you I hate, but your power to thwart me.

9. Don't take too much notice of my small ailments. Sometimes they get me the attention I need.

10. Don't nag. If you do, I shall have to protect myself by appearing deaf.

11. Don't forget that I can't explain myself as well as I should like. This is why I'm not always very accurate.

12. Don't make rash promises. Remember that I feel badly let down when promises are broken.

13. Don't tax my honesty too much. I am easily frightened into telling lies.

14. Don't be inconsistent. That completely confuses me and makes me lose faith in you.

15. Don't tell me my fears are silly. They are terribly real to me and you can do much to reassure me if you try to understand.

16. Don't put me off when I ask questions. If you do, you will find that I stop asking and seek my information elsewhere.

17. Don't ever suggest that you are perfect or infallible. It gives me too great a shock when I discover that you are neither.

18. Don't ever think it is beneath your dignity to apologize to me. An honest apology makes me feel surprisingly warm toward you.

19. Don't forget how quickly I am growing up. It must be very difficult to keep pace with me, but please try.

20. Don't forget I love experimenting. I couldn't do without it, so please be patient with it.

21. Don't forget that I can't thrive without lots of understanding and unconditional love, but I don't need to tell you that, do I?

The Bionic Man

Move over Lee Majors.... There's a new bionic man...

From MSN.com -- "Jesse Sullivan, 59, is the world's first "bionic man," his doctors like to boast. But he's surely not who Hollywood had in mind with the "Six Million Dollar Man" TV series back in the '70s. "We can rebuild him. We have the technology," the show's opening narration intoned. But the stuff of the lead character Steve Austin, played by Lee Majors, was science fiction.

Sullivan, of Dayton, Tenn., was a worker who lost both arms in a power-line accident. Today he's a real-life high-tech wonder. Doctors have "rewired" him by putting his severed arm nerves in his chest muscles. Now his mind actually "senses" his missing hands and he moves his mechanical arm by contracting those muscles. The TV character was worth $6 million, Sullivan jokes; "I'm not."

My Dog Taught Me How To Be Happy

From Canada.com -- I read a story today that really made me stop and think. The title of the story is "My Dog Taught Me How To Be Happy." It can be read in it's entirety on this page on Canada.com.

The story reminds us to stop and smell the roses. Slow down and appreciate the fact you are alive and healthy. The story talks about how a man realized how precious life was by watching his dog's reaction to his wife everytime she came in the door. The dog's tail almost fell off everytime she or he came in the door.

This reminds me of our own dog, Biscuit. It doesn't matter whether we have been gone for 3 days or 30 minutes, the greeting is the same. Tail is wagging furiously, and she is so excited we came back through the door. Shouldn't we be just as excited when our husband or wife or children come walking through the door. None of us are guaranteed we'll make it through the day. Enjoy life and get excited when your husband or wife comes home. Dogs do it. Why not us as well?

Good luck and make it a great day!

Teen Golfer’s Success Should Inspire Others

From Starbulletin.com -- "Michelle Wie's spectacular attempt to qualify to play in the PGA's U.S. Open kept the national radar above the accomplishment of another Hawaii teenage golfer. Only as the Open was about to get under way did wee Tadd Fujikawa and his inspirational story gain worldwide attention. Welcome to the big stage.

While Wie came close to qualifying for the Open earlier this month, Fujikawa, a 15-year-old who just completed his freshman year at Moanalua High, defeated nine competitors in sectional competition on Kauai to gain a spot at New York's Winged Foot Golf Club. When he teed up on Thursday, he became the youngest golfer ever to play in the Open.

A closer look revealed not only that he stands only 5-foot-1, weighs 135 pounds and can hit the ball 280 yards, but his prowess grew from an imperiled birth. Fujikawa was born 31/2 months prematurely and weighed 1 pound, 15 ounces. His mother, Lori Fujikawa, recalls doctors telling her, "You have a fetus" who had a 50-50 chance of surviving.

His mother says the infant's lungs were not developed so he was put on ventilators, and five days later underwent five surgeries to combat infection of his intestines.

"I think that it's really something special that I'm actually here, alive, not only at the U.S. Open, but just talking to everybody," he told the New York Times.

At Winged Foot his 77 on Friday put him at 18 over par, a respectable 140th in a field of 155. A course that was nightmarish for most had to be a field of dreams for one golfer."

Owner Performs CPR On Dog

From 9news.com -- "When Jack the dog ran into trouble last month, he couldn't have had a better man around to help.

Physician Dave Karli and his dog were out for a walk near their home in Edwards while a father and son were playing catch with a baseball nearby. Jack -- a Weimaraner mix -- went to get some baseballs on the ground and tried to get several in his mouth.

One went down his throat and got stuck in his airway. Karli says he reached his hand down Jack's throat and was able to remove the ball.

After the ball was removed, Jack remained passed out. Karli did C-P-R on his dog for about 15 to 20 seconds until Jack regained consciousness."

'Wonderful Life' Tops Inspiring Film List

From HappyNews.com -- "George Bailey's brother proclaimed him the richest man in Bedford Falls. Now the story of the despondent businessman, who got a chance to see how ugly the world would be without him, has been proclaimed the most inspiring American movie.

Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life," starring James Stewart as the disillusioned George, led the American Film Institute's list of inspirational films revealed Wednesday in the group's annual top-100 TV special that aired on CBS.

"We all connect to that story. We may not all connect to the story of a fighter from Philadelphia or a singing family in the Austrian Alps," said the TV special's producer, Bob Gazzale, referring to two other films on the list, "Rocky" and "The Sound of Music."

"But there's no way to get away from the inspiring story of George Bailey. It relates to us all."

"To Kill a Mockingbird," with Gregory Peck as the upright Southern dad seeking justice for a wrongly accused black man, was No. 2 on the list chosen from 300 nominated films on ballots sent to 1,500 filmmakers, actors, critics and others in Hollywood.

Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List," starring Liam Neeson as a German businessman who saves his Jewish workers from extermination by the Nazis, was No. 3.

Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky" was fourth, while another Capra-Stewart collaboration, the political saga "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," ranked fifth.

Spielberg landed two other films in the top 10, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" (No. 6) and "Saving Private Ryan" (No. 10). Rounding out the top 10: "The Grapes of Wrath" (No. 7), "Breaking Away" (No. 8) and "Miracle on 34th Street" (No. 9)."

Joke About a Robot And Man In a Bar

Occasionally, a joke comes across my email that I can't help but forward. This is one of those jokes. It was too good not to share.

A man enters a bar and orders a drink. The bar has a robot bartender. The robot serves him a perfectly prepared cocktail, and then asks him, "What's your IQ?"

The man replies "162" and the robot proceeds to make conversation about global warming factors, quantum physics and spirituality, biomimicry, environmental interconnectedness, string theory, nanotechnology, and sexual proclivities.

The customer is very impressed and thinks, "This is really cool." He decides to test the robot. He walks out of the bar, turns around, and comes back in for another drink. Again, the robot serves him the perfectly prepared drink and asks him, "What's your IQ?" The man responds, "about a 100."

Immediately the robot starts talking, but this time, about football, NASCAR, baseball, supermodels, favorite fast foods, guns, and women's body parts.

Really impressed, the man leaves the bar and decides to give the robot one more test. He heads out and returns, the robot serves him and asks, "What's your IQ?"

The man replies, "Er, 50, I think." And the robot says... real slowly,

"So.. is... your... party... gonna... nominate... Hillary... for... president???"

Jack The Cat Chases Black Bear Up Tree

From Yahoo! News -- "A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree — twice.

Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.

"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's editions." To read the complete story, please go to this page on Yahoo!

Memorial to Firefighters Built Facing WTC

From HappyNews.com -- "One tower at the World Trade Center is on fire and the other has just been hit. Dozens of firefighters approach the burning buildings with shovels and their largest trucks. One takes off his helmet and sits down to rest, burying his face in his hand.

These images and others portraying firefighters at the trade center have been cast in a giant bronze sculpture to be unveiled Saturday, the first memorial to the 343 firefighters killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.

Six feet tall, 56 feet long and 7,000 pounds, the memorial has been affixed to the ''10 House,'' Engine Co. 10/Ladder Co. 10, across the street from where the south tower once stood.

The first major memorial for Sept. 11 firefighters was donated by a law firm that raised $1 million from its members and some of its shipping clients from Greece, Monaco and Canada.

Holland & Knight was inspired by the loss of its partner Glenn Winuk, a 20-year volunteer firefighter. The 40-year-old died at the trade center after racing from his office blocks away to help in the rescue effort."

English Only at Philly Cheesesteak Joint

From Yahoo! News -- "Bistec con queso? Not at Geno's Steaks.

An English-only ordering policy has thrust one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints into the national immigration debate.

Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Geno's — which together with its chief rival, Pat's King of Steaks, forms the epicenter of an area described as "ground zero for cheesesteaks" — has posted small signs telling customers, "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING `SPEAK ENGLISH.'"

"They don't know how lucky they are. All we're asking them to do is learn the English language," said Geno's owner Joseph Vento, 66. "We're out to help these people, but they've got to help themselves, too." To continue reading this article, please go to this page on Yahoo! News.

I agree with Geno's owner. I don't have a problem with legal immigrants, but I do think they should learn to speak English rather than the other way around. If I was going to live in a foreign country where English was not the primary language, I would learn to speak their language. It's THEIR country. They shouldn't change. I should. That's the point. This is America. English is our national language. Learn to speak it. Gracias!

New Contact Lenses Give Athletes an Edge

From HappyNews.com -- Here is a story that all of us who wear contacts and play sports will want to pay attention to:

"When Camille Walters plays soccer, her normally brown eyes have a spooky red tint. That's because the 15-year-old wears tinted contact lenses that block certain wavelengths of light and help athletes see better.

Oh, and they look cool, too.

''It gives me more confidence because you feel intimidating and bigger and stronger, kind of an ego-booster,'' said Walters, who plays for Father Ryan, a Catholic high school in Nashville.

Walters and a growing number of other athletes are wearing the MaxSight lenses, which were developed jointly by Nike Inc. and contact lens maker Bausch & Lomb Inc.

The lens - large enough to extend a ring around the iris - comes in two colors: amber and grey-green.

The amber lens is for fast-moving ball sports, such as tennis, baseball, football or soccer. Grey-green is better for blocking glare for runners or helping a golfer read the contour of the ground.

Professional athletes tested the lenses last year before they were rolled out for general sales.

Golfer Michelle Wie and baseball players Ken Griffey Jr. and A.J. Pierzynski wear MaxSight lenses, along with members of Manchester United, the U.S. men's soccer team and the Texas Longhorns' football team."

Spend Some Quality Time With Your Children

For some of you who know me, a headline that says "Spend Some Quality Time With Your Children" is quite strange since you know I don't have any children. However, those same people also know that my wife and I have a yellow lab named Biscuit who is six years old and might as well be our child.

Frances, my wife, is out of town this weekend, so I have been hanging out with Biscuit for the weekend. I realized something Saturday afternoon. I played golf Saturday and didn't get home until about 4pm. I left about 10:15am. When I got home, Biscuit was ready to do something. She was as happy as she could be that I was home, and she wanted my attention. I spent the next couple of hours tossing a tennis ball to her and just hanging out with her. If you have a dog, you'll understand how peaceful and fulfilling this time is.

It made me realize something. What if I had a child. I read all the time about neglected children. Since I am a man, I am going to speak directly to the fathers reading this blog. Don't neglect your children. It doesn't take much to show your child how much you love them. I remember when I was a child, my dad and I would go outside and play catch with either the football or baseball. It didn't matter to me if we only did it for 15 minutes. It was the best 15 minutes of the entire day.

Make it a mission to spend some quality time with your child. If you don't have children, but have a dog like me, make it a mission to spend some quality time with them everyday. I promise you, no matter how bad your day was, spending time with them will turn the worst day into the best day in a matter of minutes.

Good luck and make it a great day!

My Brother Is Not His Disability

From MSNBC.com -- This is a heart-warming story that should remind us all that life is meant to be lived no matter what your circumstances are...

"Last July, I took a car trip with Kevin, my 15-year-old brother. The music was blasting and the sun was shining through the windows, warming our faces. We were singing loudly to the tune on the radio—Bruce Springsteen, of course. We cruised down the highway enjoying the summer heat and each other’s presence. I looked over and couldn’t help but feel immensely happy when I saw his face with its beautiful smile that cures all pain and those deep blue eyes that see the world in a perfect light. The song ended, and he hit repeat.

We were going to a summer camp for children and young adults with developmental problems. Kevin has Down syndrome, one of the most common causes of cognitive delays, and he is legally blind. He is also an amazing young man who has many talents to share with the world. Unfortunately, most people miss out on his gifts because they are focused on his disabilities. I wish everyone could see him as I do. He is just Kevin. Simple as that.

A well-meaning friend once told me, “Colgan, it must be so hard having a brother who is mentally retarded.” I was so taken aback! Perhaps it was my naiveté, but I prefer to believe it is because I have lived with Kevin for 16 years now that I see him as he really is. At that moment, my eyes were opened, and I began to realize that many people in the world share my friend’s view.

My brother is not his disability. He is a teenager who loves sports and PlayStation, who cares a little bit too much about his hair and is a little bit too confident, who is kind to every person he meets, who makes you laugh so hard your stomach hurts. He’s a boy just like anyone else. Kevin does not have “special needs.” All he needs is a chance."

Pilot Lands Plane With Rogue Snake in One Hand

From MSNBC.com -- "The much-talked-about movie "Snakes on a Plane" doesn't open until August. But Monty Coles doesn't have to see it. He's lived it.

Three-thousand feet in the air on Saturday, he discovered a four-and-a-half-foot black snake peering out at him from the instrument panel of his Piper Cherokee.

He tried to swat the snake. But it just fell to his feet under the rudder pedals and then darted to the other side of the cockpit.

So, while flying the plane with one hand, Coles grabbed the snake behind its head with his other hand, even as it coiled around his arm. Next, he told the control tower he needed emergency landing clearance — and that he had "one hand full of snake and the other hand full of plane."

Footprints in the Sand by Mary Stevenson

I came across this poem the other night, and thought I'd share it with you. We've all had some rough days, weeks, months and years. Just remember, we're not alone in the journey. Enjoy the poem...

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”

The Lord replied,
“The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
is when I carried you.”

Mary Stevenson
