The Law of the Garbage Truck

Here's an email I received the other day. It didn't have an author, but it definitely passes on a valuable lesson:

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day?

However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly he/she can get back her focus on what’s important. Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab.

Here’s what happened. …… I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car’s back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly.

So, I said, "Why did you just do that?" This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!? And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck."

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You’ll be happy you did.

So this was it: The Law of the Garbage Truck. I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: At work, at home, on the streets? It was that day I said, "I’m not going to do it anymore."

Well, now when I see Garbage Trucks, and I see the load they’re carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my Taxi Driver, I don’t make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.

Denzel Washington - A True AMERICAN Actor

I received an email today regarding Denzel Washington. As with all emails, I first checked it's validity on Snopes.com, and it appears this story is mostly true. Here is the email in it's entirety, and below it are some clarifications about the some statements in the email:

Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troups at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio,Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers that have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially burn victims. They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base but as you can imagine, they are almost completely filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it.

The question I have is why does Alec Baldwin, Madonna, Sean Penn and other Hollywood types make front page news with their anti-everything America crap and this doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the base newspaper in San Antonio.

As I mentioned earlier, the basics of this email are true. Denzel did make a substantial contribution, but he didn't take out his checkbook and write a check on the spot. He actually made a contribution a few months later. But, for the most part, the story is accurate. His visit was back in 2004.

It is funny to me how news like this doesn't get picked up by the mainstream media, but at least there are sites like this one that are trying to spread the good news.

Family Adopts Slain Son's German Shepherd From Iraq

This is an amazing and heartfelt story. Dustin Lee was killed in Iraq earlier this year, and Lex, the K-9 German Shepherd who spent 24 hours a day with him in Iraq, has finally been adopted by Dustin's parents.
