Shocking News - NBC Shocked At Positive Response To Brian Williams' Request For Positive News

Did you watch Brian Williams from NBC's Nightly News last week ask for viewers to send in their positive stories. The response was overwhelming. NBC was shocked at the response. It might have come as a shock to NBC, but not to me or any of you who read this blog. People are tired of negative news.

I've been publishing this blog now for over three years. Over the last couple of months, because the news has been so negative, I found myself falling into the negative abyss. It's so easy during this challenging economy to just go with the flow and say that the world has gone to, excuse my language, hell in a hand basket. But, the truth is, positive things are happening all over the world right now just like they were three years ago, and just like they were every year before that. It's up to you. You can see the negative, or you can see the positive.

So, as a sort of re-dedication to the positive, I have re-designed PositivePelham.com, and I'm going to work hard to continue bringing you positive stories from around the world. I believe that now, more than ever, we all need some positive news in our lives. What do you think of the re-design? Let me hear from you.

As I've always said, things really aren't all that bad unless you let them be. Make it a great day!

Here's the video of Brian Williams asking for positive stories. Did you send him one?

Who Is Joe The Plumber From Last Night's Presidential Debate

If you were watching the Presidential debate last night, you heard Joe the Plumber being mentioned by both candidates 23 times. So, who exactly is Joe? His name is Joe Wurzelbacher and Good Morning America interviewed him this morning. I agree with Joe when he says, "Why should you be taxed more for being successful."

Under Senator Obama's plan, anyone making over $250,000 a year would be taxed more than everyone else. In my opinion, that's not right. Just because you've worked hard and make more money than 95% of the American population, that doesn't mean you should have to pay more taxes. What do you think? Enjoy!

Good News From the Housing Market!

Since starting this blog back in 2005, I've always been of the notion that things really aren't as bad as mainstream media would have you believe. Yes, the economy appears to be in horrible shape right now. But, as I heard this morning on the morning news, we are not in a depression, and we are not in a recession. The rule of thumb is that a recession occurs when real gross domestic product (GDP) growth is negative for two or more consecutive quarters. Currently, the GDP hasn't even been negative for one quarter.

I'm not ignoring the state of affairs, but I am choosing to dig deeper to find positive stories that are going on right now. One of those stories is on the front page of CNBC.com as I write this post: Pending Home Sales Jump As Buyers Grab Bargains.

This shouldn't come as a surprise. If you've been thinking about selling your house and upgrading, now is one of the best times to buy a new house in recent memory. Here in Atlanta, home prices have skyrocketed over the last ten years to unbelievable levels. The market correction over the last year has actually brought prices back down to a level that is reasonable, but still above average.

So, to grab a statement from one of my favorite financial teachers Dave Ramsey, "The only economy that really matters is your OWN!" How are you personally doing? Don't worry about your IRA or 401K right now. They'll come back. But, if you're personally carrying a lot of debt, I recommend you spend 100% of your time working on getting yourself completely out of debt. Because, even when times are tough, if you're not in debt, you don't really have anything to worry about. You can weather the storm, AND, you can get a new home loan without any problems. Even during these tough times, banks have no problem loaning money to consumers with good credit and low amounts of debt. Which means, you can take advantage of the incredible bargains on homes right now!

You see, there is always a positive spin on every negative story. And, if you're like the 95% of Americans who are carrying way too much credit card debt (I've been there and know how you feel), I've got a suggestion. If you truly want to change your financial situation, you need to get one or both of the following programs. I have listened to them both and am currently implementing the programs. They work. They're not quick fixes and they're certainly not easy, but THEY WORK!

Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover: You can buy the book, but I recommend you either get the book on CD or you get Dave's Financial Peach University kit because you need to hear Dave speak. He's a fantastic teacher.

John Cummuta's Transforming Debt Into Wealth System: Mr Cummuta's system is so simple, yet so effective. Following his program, you can be out of debt completely including your mortgage in about seven years. And, with no more money than what you're already making right now. It sounds too good to be true, but it's not. Believe me. It's the way people have always built wealth in this country until about 20 years ago when we all decided that's it's better to charge it that actually buy it.

Until later, relax, take a deep breath, make smart decisions and make it a great day...

Transcript of Sarah Palin's Speech As She Was Introduced To The World By John McCain

Following up my earlier post, here is the complete transcript of Senator John McCain and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's speech today. I thought she did a great job.

---------------------
Transcript of speech:
---------------------

MCCAIN: Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you. Thanks for reminding me.

AUDIENCE: John McCain! John McCain! John McCain!

MCCAIN: Thank you. Thank you for that wonderful welcome. And thank you.

Let me tell you, I’m very happy.

Thank you. Twice is enough.

Thank you very much. That’s three times. Thank you. Thank you.

I’m very happy — I’m very happy today to spend my birthday with you and to make a historic announcement in Dayton, a city built on hard, honest work of good people.

Like the entire industrial Midwest, Dayton has contributed much to the prosperity and progress of America, and now, in these tough, changing times, after all you’ve done for our country, you want your government to understand what you’re going through, to stand on your side and fight for you.

MCCAIN: And that’s what I intend to do.

That’s why I’m running for president: to fight for you, to make government stand on your side, not in your way.

Friends, I’ve spent the last few months looking for a running mate that will who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people that are counting on us.

As I’m sure you know, I had many good people to choose from, all of them dedicated to this country and to getting us back on the road to prosperity and peace. And I am very grateful to all of them, and honored by their willingness to serve with me.

And I’m going to continue to rely on their support and counsel during this campaign, and after we win this election, when the real work begins.

But I could only choose one. And it’s with great pride and gratitude that I tell you I have found the right partner to help me stand up to those who value their privileges over their responsibilities, who put power over principle, and put their interests before your needs.

MCCAIN: I found someone with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracies; someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past; someone who’s stopped government from wasting taxpayers’ money…

… on things they don’t want or need and put it back to work for the people; someone with executive experience, who has shown great tenacity and skill in tackling tough problems, especially our dangerous dependence on foreign oil; someone who reached across the aisle and asked Republicans, Democrats and independents to serve in government; someone with strong principles of fighting spirit and deep compassion…

… someone who grew up in a decent, hardworking, middle-class family, whose father was an elementary school teacher and mother was the school secretary.

They taught their children to care about others, to work hard and to stand up with courage for the things you believe in.

Both of them were coaches, too, and raised their children to excel at sports.

And I’m sure they taught them skills that will surely come in handy over the next two months.

The person I’m about to introduce to you was a union member and is married to a union member and understands the problems, the hopes and the values of working people, knows what it’s like to worry about mortgage payments and health care and the cost of gasoline and groceries; a standout high school point guard; a concerned citizen who became a member of the PTA, then a city council member, and then a mayor, and now a governor…

… who beat the long odds to win a tough election on a message of reform and public integrity. And I am especially proud to say in the week we celebrate the anniversary of women’s suffrage, a devoted…

MCCAIN: … a devoted wife and a mother of five.

She’s not — she’s not from these parts and she’s not from Washington. But when you get to know her, you’re going to be as impressed as I am.

She’s got the grit, integrity, and good sense and fierce devotion to the common good that is exactly what we need in Washington today.

She knows where she comes from, and she knows who she works for. She stands up for what’s right, and she doesn’t let anyone tell her to sit down.

She’s fought oil companies and party bosses and do-nothing bureaucrats and anyone who puts their interests before the interests of the people she swore an oath to serve.

She’s exactly who I need. She’s exactly who this country needs to help me fight…

… to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second.

My friends and fellow Americans…

MCCAIN: I am very pleased and very privileged to introduce to you the next vice president of the United States…

… Governor Sarah Palin of the great state of Alaska.

PALIN: Thank you so much.

And I thank you, Senator McCain and Mrs. McCain, for the confidence that you have placed in me. Senator, I am honored to be chosen as your running mate.

I will be honored to serve next to the next president of the United States.

I know that when Senator McCain gave me this opportunity, he had a short list of highly qualified men and women. And to have made that list at all, it was a privilege. And to have been chosen brings a great challenge.

I know that it will demand the best that I have to give, and I promise nothing less.

First — first, there are a few people whom I would like you to meet. I want to start with my husband, Todd Palin.

And Todd and I are actually celebrating our 20th anniversary today. And I promised him…

I had promised Todd a little surprise for the anniversary present, and hopefully he knows that I did deliver.

And then we have as — after my husband, who is a lifelong commercial fisherman, lifetime Alaskan. He’s a production operator.

Todd is a production operator in the oil fields up on Alaska’s North Slope. And he’s a proud member of the United Steelworkers union. And he’s a world-champion snow machine racer.

Todd and I met way back in high school. And I can tell you that he is still the man that I admire most in this world.

Along the way, Todd and I have shared many blessings. And four out of five of them are here with us today.

Our oldest son, Track, though, he’ll be following the presidential campaign from afar. On September 11th of last year, our son enlisted in the United States Army.

Track now serves in an infantry brigade. And on September 11th, Track will deploy to Iraq in the service of his country. And Todd and I are so proud of him and of all the fine men and women serving this country (inaudible)

AUDIENCE: USA! USA! USA!

PALIN: Next to Todd is our daughter, Bristol, another daughter, Willow, our youngest daughter, Piper, and over in their arms is our son, Trig, a beautiful baby boy. He was born just in April.

PALIN: His name is Trig Paxson Van Palin.

Some of life’s greatest opportunities come unexpectedly. And this is certainly the case today.

I never really set out to be involved in public affairs, much less to run for this office. My mom and dad both worked at the local elementary school. And my husband and I, we both grew up working with our hands. I was just your average hockey mom in Alaska, raising…

We’re busy raising our kids. I was serving as the team mom and coaching some basketball on the side. I got involved in the PTA and then was elected to the city council, and then elected mayor of my hometown, where my agenda was to stop wasteful spending, and cut property taxes, and put the people first.

I was then appointed ethics commissioner and chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. And when I found corruption there, I fought it hard, and I held the offenders to account.

Along with fellow reformers in the great state of Alaska, as governor, I’ve stood up to the old politics as usual, to the special interests, to the lobbyists, the big oil companies, and the good-old- boy network.

When oil and gas prices went up so dramatically and the state revenues followed with that increase, I sent a large share of that revenue directly back to the people of Alaska. And we are now — we’re now embarking on a $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence.

I signed major ethics reform. And I appointed both Democrats and independents to serve in my administration. And I championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. In fact, I told Congress — I told Congress, “Thanks, but no thanks,” on that bridge to nowhere.

If our state wanted a bridge, I said we’d build it ourselves. Well, it’s always, though, safer in politics to avoid risk, to just kind of go along with the status quo. But I didn’t get into government to do the safe and easy things. A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not why the ship is built.

Politics isn’t just a game of competing interests and clashing parties. The people of America expect us to seek public office and to serve for the right reasons.

PALIN: And the right reason is to challenge the status quo and to serve the common good.

Now, no one expects us to agree on everything, whether in Juneau or in Washington. But we are expected to govern with integrity, and goodwill, and clear convictions, and a servant’s heart.

Now, no leader in America has shown these qualities so clearly or present so clear a threat to business as usual in Washington as Senator John S. McCain.

PALIN: This — this is a moment when principles and political independence matter a lot more than just the party line. And this is a man who has always been there to serve his country, not just his party.

And this is a moment that requires resolve and toughness, and strength of heart in the American president. And my running mate is a man who has shown those qualities in the darkest of places, and in the service of his country.

A colleague once said about Senator McCain, “That man did things for this country that few people could go through. Never forget that.” And that speaker was former Senator John Glenn of Ohio.

And John Glenn knows something about heroism. And I’m going to make sure nobody does forget that in this campaign. There is only one candidate who has truly fought for America, and that man is John McCain.

PALIN: This is a moment — this is a moment when great causes can be won and great threats overcome, depending on the judgment of our next president.

In a dangerous world, it is John McCain who will lead America’s friends and allies in preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

It was John McCain who cautioned long ago about the harm that Russian aggression could do to Georgia and to other small democratic neighbors and to the world oil markets.

It was Senator McCain who refused to hedge his support for our troops in Iraq, regardless of the political costs.

And you know what? As the mother of one of those troops, and as the commander of Alaska’s National Guard, that’s the kind of man I want as our commander in chief.

AUDIENCE: USA! USA! USA!

PALIN: Profiles in courage: They can be hard to come by these days. You know, so often we just find them in books. But next week when we nominate John McCain for president, we’re putting one on the ballot.

PALIN: To serve as vice president beside such a man would be the privilege of a lifetime. And it’s fitting that this trust has been given to me 88 years almost to the day after the women of America first gained the right to vote.

I think — I think as well today of two other women who came before me in national elections.

I can’t begin this great effort without honoring the achievements of Geraldine Ferraro in 1984…

… and of course Senator Hillary Clinton, who showed such determination and grace in her presidential campaign.

It was rightly noted in Denver this week that Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America…

… but it turns out the women of America aren’t finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all.

So for my part, the mission is clear: The next 67 days I’m going to take our campaign to every part of our country and our message of reform to every voter of every background in every political party, or no party at all.

PALIN: If you want change in Washington, if you hope for a better America, then we’re asking for your vote on the 4th of November.

My fellow Americans, come join our cause.

Join our cause and help our country to elect a great man the next president of the United States.

And I thank you, and I — God bless you, I say, and God bless America. Thank you.

Strangers Help Elderly Man Pick Up Thousands Of Dollars

From Gimundo.com - It's nice to see that despite what the mainstream news would like you to believe, people, for the most part, still do the right thing. Case in point, 70-year old Ludwig Geier was coming out of a bank and stumbled and dropped an envelope he was carrying that contained several thousand dollars. About 200 bills went flying around a parking lot. Instead of grabbing some and bolting, everyone in the parking lot started picking up the dollars and returning them to Ludwig.

Geier was extremely grateful and said, "I can only say I'm going to put a prayer out for them," he said. "If I could get them together, I'd buy them dinner and drinks."

Kansas City Chiefs' TE Gonzalez Saves Man's Life In Restaurant

Do you know the Heimlich maneuver? I know how to do it, but after reading this story, I'm going to brush up on the technique.

Last Thursday night, Kansas City Chiefs' tight end Tony Gonzalez was having dinner in a restaurant with his family when a man sitting directly behind him started choking on a piece of meat. Everybody else in the restaurant was just starring at the guy, but Tony jumped up and performed the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged the piece of meat as the man was turning blue.

Everything turned out fine for the man, and Tony is being praised as a hero. To read the complete story, please go to this page on Yahoo.com.

Make it a great day and brush up on life-saving techniques...

Conan O'Brien's Tribute to Tim Russert Last Night

As many of you know by now, NBC News' Washington Bureau chief and host of Meet the Press, Tim Russert died suddenly yesterday of a heart attack. While this is by no means positive news, which is what I try to report on every day, Conan O'Brien, who was a good friend of Tim's, did a really good job last night paying tribute to Tim by showing a couple of light-hearted exchanges between himself and Tim. I think it was a perfect way to pay tribute to a man that most people only knew as a hard-nosed journalist. My thoughts and prayers go out to Tim's wife, son Luke and his entire family.

Want To Live Longer - Do What The Blue Hairs Do...

Well, not exactly, but a researcher has found four areas of the world where there are a large number of centurions (over 100). And, he recommends following some of the same habits they do, and you just might live to be over 100 yourself. The four areas are: the mountainous Barbagia region of Sardinia, an island off the coast of Italy; the Japanese island of Okinawa; a community of Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda, California, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles; and the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica, in Central America.

So what are some of their secrets? One that I know a lot of my friends will like is drinking a glass of red wine on a daily basis. It's full of antioxidants and has long been known to promote better health.

To me, the most important trait he mentioned is having a sense of purpose and a strong support network. I can personally vouch for this one. The Director of Marketing at my company is 73 years old, but you wouldn't know it. He looks and acts 20 years younger and is showing no signs of slowing down. As long as you have a purpose in life, enjoy what you're doing, surround yourself with friends and family and keep yourself physically active, there is no reason why we all can't live to be over 100. To read this complete article and find out more about how these people are living to be over 100, please visit this page on Yahoo.com.

One piece of advice. I've recently been following the financial advice of John Cummuta. He advocates eliminating all debt from your life including your cars and homes, and he has a proven system to do this in 5-7 years. If you're planning on living over 100, then you might want to look into John's system because you're going to need a lot of money in retirement since you're going to be living a lot longer than the average person.

Good luck and make it a great day!

14-Year Old Girl Helps Passengers Escape Burning Plane

From Gimundo.com - When a jetliner leaving the Congo last week crashed through a fence and into a market while trying to takeoff, April Mosier, a 14-year old passenger saved the day. Because of the nature of the crash, the exits were blocked, but April and another passenger managed to open up a crack in the plane enough for April to get out and open an escape route from the plane.

She saved the lives of many passengers including her parents and adopted little brother. She truly is a modern day hero. To read the full story of how April's quick thinking saved lives, go to this page on Gimundo.com

Man Trapped In Elevator For Over 41 Hours In 1999 Is Now Famous

Back in 1999, this guy was trapped in an elevator for over 41 hours. The entire ordeal was captured by the video surveillance cameras in the top of the elevator, and the video has just now been leaked out onto the Internet, and all of a sudden, this guy is now making the rounds on the talk shows. Here he is on Good Morning America talking with Diane Sawyer about the ordeal.

I have to give Diane a lot of credit for this interview because he's not exactly the easiest person to interview. He's pretty bland, but he's definitely one lucky man. Enjoy!

Americans Don't Agree On Much, But We All Agree The Bible Is The #1 Book Of All-Time

A new Harris Poll revealed that America's favorite book is the Bible.

When it comes to literary pursuits in the United States most people agree on at least one thing -- the most popular book is the Bible, according to a new survey."

"Finally, they may not agree on candidates, but one thing that brings together partisans is their favorite book. For Republicans, Democrats and Independents, the top two books are the same -- the Bible followed by "Gone With the Wind."

If we're all going to agree on one thing, then I'm glad this is it. To read the full article and find out which other books Americans like, please visit this page on Yahoo.com.

Barack Obama Is A Distant Relative Of General Robert E. Lee

Researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society did a study on the three candidates for President, and there are some very interesting findings. Among them:

Obama has a prolific presidential lineage that features Democrats and Republicans. His distant cousins include President George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman and James Madison. Other Obama cousins include Vice President Dick Cheney, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and Civil War General Robert E. Lee, and he's also related to Brad Pitt. I'll give him credit, that's a pretty impressive blood line...

Clinton, who is of French-Canadian descent on her mother's side, is a distant cousin of singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette and actress Angelina Jolie. She's also
distant cousins with beatnik author Jack Kerouac and Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles of England.

McCain, whose lineage was harder to trace because of poor record-keeping is a sixth cousin of first lady Laura Bush.

Hero Dog Bitten By Snake And Almost Loses His Life

From Australia's the Herald Sun -- Once again, a dog steps in to save the day. Roary, the Staffordshire bull terrier pictured to the left, stepped in front of his owner's little three-year old who was about to be bitten by a poisonous brown snake.

Roary almost died, but his owner managed to get him to the vet in time to save his life (even stopping to blow air into his nose along the way to the vet).

The pup is doing just fine now, and all is well. To read the entire story of how Roary saved the day, please go to this page on the Herald Sun's website.

Dogs Give Up Their Lives To Save Their Family

For those of us who are dog owners, this is both a sad and inspirational story. Bella and Maddie, two Golden Retrievers, alerted their family about a fire in their house. Because of the dogs warning the family was able to get out of the house, but the dogs didn't make it because they stayed in the house because they thought a family member was still in the house. That, my friends, is why dogs are more than just pets. They're members of the family.
