Kansas City Chiefs' TE Gonzalez Saves Man's Life In Restaurant

Do you know the Heimlich maneuver? I know how to do it, but after reading this story, I'm going to brush up on the technique.

Last Thursday night, Kansas City Chiefs' tight end Tony Gonzalez was having dinner in a restaurant with his family when a man sitting directly behind him started choking on a piece of meat. Everybody else in the restaurant was just starring at the guy, but Tony jumped up and performed the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged the piece of meat as the man was turning blue.

Everything turned out fine for the man, and Tony is being praised as a hero. To read the complete story, please go to this page on Yahoo.com.

Make it a great day and brush up on life-saving techniques...

President Bush Gives Medal of Honor To Navy SEAL

This is one of those stories that no matter what your political affiliation, will make you stop and truly appreciate the sacrifices that our men and women in the armed forces are making on a daily basis.

Navy SEAL Michael A. Monsoor gave his life to save his comrades in Iraq. It happened on a rooftop in Iraq. A grenade came out of nowhere and bounced off of Monsoor's chest. He knew that he could either jump off the roof and save himself, grab the grenade and try to throw it away before it exploded or jump on top of it and save the lives of his fellow soldiers. Without hesitation, Monsoor jumped on top of the grenade and saved his friends' lives.

Monsoor was given the Medal of Honor by President Bush in a ceremony last week at the White House. Monsoor's parents were on hand to accept the award. It was a very emotional service, and one that all those in attendance will never forget. To read the entire story of Monsoor's heroic act, please visit this page on HappyNews.com.

Softball Players Help Injured Opponent Score Home Run

It's funny how doing the right thing is sometimes the wrong thing to do. Such is the case in this story from Gimundo.com. Sara Tucholsky, a player on the Western Oregon University softball team, hit a home run in a game against Central Washington, but as she was headed to first base, her knee buckled and she went down. It's against the rules for your own team to help you around the bases, so since she was unable to run herself, it looked as though the home run wouldn't count.

But, two players from the opposing team actually picked Sara up and carried her around the bases stopping on each base so she could touch the bag with her foot. This selfless act moved Sara's teammates to tears, but it also cost Central Washington the playoffs because they were disqualified.

But, doing the right thing was the only thing to do. Central Washington may have lost out on the playoffs, but their character was stronger than ever. Here's a quick video about the event from The Today Show:

Husband Saves Wife From Crocodile By Poking It In The Eyes

From BBC News - An Australian man and his wife were visiting the Litchfield National Park near Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory when a crocodile lunged out of the water and grabbed his wife by the legs.

Instinctively, the man jumped into the water and like the Crocodile Hunter himself, he jumped on the back of the croc and started wrestling with it. While on the croc's back, he managed to poke it in both eyes, and that's when he believes it let go of his wife.

Even though he rescued her, her injuries were very severe and are going to require surgery, but it was his self-less act that saved his wife's life. To read the complete story, please go to this page on the BBC News' website.

From Gimundo.com - When a jetliner leaving the Congo last week crashed through a fence and into a market while trying to takeoff, April Mosier, a 14-year old passenger saved the day. Because of the nature of the crash, the exits were blocked, but April and another passenger managed to open up a crack in the plane enough for April to get out and open an escape route from the plane.

She saved the lives of many passengers including her parents and adopted little brother. She truly is a modern day hero. To read the full story of how April's quick thinking saved lives, go to this page on Gimundo.com

Atlanta's Saving Grace During Friday Night's Tornado - The University of Alabama

What do I mean by the title of this post? Unless you've been on another planet, you're probably familiar with the havoc that a tornado caused in downtown Atlanta this past Friday night.

What you may not realize is that one University of Alabama basketball player should be considered a hero. His name is Mykal Riley, and he is the player who made a last second three-point shot to send the Alabama vs. Mississippi State basketball game into overtime during the SEC Basketball Tournament being held at the Georgia Dome. Had Mykal missed the shot, thousands of fans would have been outside on the streets in downtown Atlanta when the tornado hit rather than inside the dome.

One never knows what would have happened if he'd missed the shot, but I'll say this, everyone who was in attendance at that game should probably send Mykal a thank you note, because he just might have saved thousands of lives.

If you missed the footage of the tornado during the game, here's live footage of the game as the tornado roared past the dome.

Hero Dog Bitten By Snake And Almost Loses His Life

From Australia's the Herald Sun -- Once again, a dog steps in to save the day. Roary, the Staffordshire bull terrier pictured to the left, stepped in front of his owner's little three-year old who was about to be bitten by a poisonous brown snake.

Roary almost died, but his owner managed to get him to the vet in time to save his life (even stopping to blow air into his nose along the way to the vet).

The pup is doing just fine now, and all is well. To read the entire story of how Roary saved the day, please go to this page on the Herald Sun's website.

Dogs Give Up Their Lives To Save Their Family

For those of us who are dog owners, this is both a sad and inspirational story. Bella and Maddie, two Golden Retrievers, alerted their family about a fire in their house. Because of the dogs warning the family was able to get out of the house, but the dogs didn't make it because they stayed in the house because they thought a family member was still in the house. That, my friends, is why dogs are more than just pets. They're members of the family.

Dog and Cat Honored For Saving Masters' Lives

This is a great story...

First, Toby, a 2 1/2 year old Golden Retriever who was rescued from a garbage bin as a puppy saved his masters' life. From Yahoo.com -- "When Debbie Parkhurst choked on a piece of apple at her Maryland home, her dog jumped in, landing hard on her chest and forcing the morsel to pop out of her throat. "...Parkhurst suggested her pooch's Heimlich maneuver might have been guided by divine intervention.

"That's what our veterinarian said," she said. "He wasn't making a joke; he's very spiritual, and now I have to agree with him."

Second, Winnie the cat, saved her family by waking them up when their house was being poisoned by carbon monoxide. "...a gas-driven pump being used to remove flood waters from their basement in New Castle, Ind., last March malfunctioned, spreading carbon monoxide through the house. By the time Winnie moved into rescue mode, the couple's 14-year-old son, Michael, was already unconscious.

"Winnie jumped on the bed and was clawing at me, with a kind of angry meow," Cathy Keesling said. "When I woke up I felt like a T-bar had hit me across the head."

State police and sheriff's officers responding to her 911 call said the family was only minutes from death, judging by the amount of poisonous gas in the house."

To read the complete story about Toby and Winnie and five humans who were also honored, please visit this page on Yahoo.com.

Remembering My Grandmother Two Years Later

My grandmother passed away two years ago today. It's hard to believe she's been gone that long. It seems like just yesterday I was sitting on one of the old bar stools in her kitchen watching her make a huge dinner for everyone.

I was reading a post I made about her over a year ago and thought I'd share it with you again since there are so many new readers to the blog. She was a special woman and someone I miss tremendously: (This is an excerpt from a post made on Saturday, December 31, 2005)

--

Person of the Year -- My grandmother -- My grandmother passed away a few months ago. She was a wonderful person and a true friend to everyone she met. She lived in a small town in Alabama called Geneva. During her life, she had many obstacles to overcome, but she always overcame them, and became a better person because of them. To mention a few:
  • When she was in the prime of her life, she was hit by a train when her car became stuck on a railroad track. Her entire lower body was crushed and broken. It took her a long time, but she eventually walked again even though the doctors told everyone she would probably never walk again.
  • Her husband (my grandfather and one of the greatest men I've ever known) died of Parkinson's disease after a long and grueling 7-8 years of suffering. During this time, my grandmother stood right by his side and took care of his every needs. She put his needs ahead of her own. When he was in the hospital on his deathbed, he didn't die until he heard my grandmother say, "It's okay for you to go. I'll be okay." He then relaxed and passed away knowing she was going to be okay. She took care of him and he left this world knowing she was going to be okay.
  • After my grandfather's passing, she mourned for a short time, but then she surprised us all by becoming extremely active with her senior citizens club. She traveled around the country with them seeing sights and places she had never been to. She really made the best of the rest of her life. I was so impressed, because many people like her who had been so dependent and attached to a loved one usually withdraw into depression and have a really hard time adjusting to life without their spouse. She lived life to it's fullest and was fond of saying to me, "I'm just happy to have another day to live. I'm going to enjoy it." Something we all should say every morning!
  • But, during this time of her life, the unthinkable happened. One of her two sons, my uncle Troyce, was killed in a freak accident in his early 50's. He was barbecuing on his back porch when the propane tank exploded and he was killed. This was horrible for us all. Uncle Troyce was so fun to be around. He had a joy for life like no other. This was devastating to my grandmother, but she managed to move on knowing Troyce was now in heaven with his father.
  • Life certainly dealt her some bad breaks, but it was how she bounced back from the bad times that defined her life and legacy. She was truly an inspiring woman whom I deeply miss.
Good luck and make it a great day!

74-Year Old Man Fights Off Tire-Iron Yielding Mugger

Who says senior citizens are vulnerable? Not Bruce Ferraro! The 74-year old was getting into his car at a local mall when a guy bearing a tire iron tapped on his window and told him to get out of the car and give him all his money. From Boston.com:

"Ferraro says, 'What, are you kidding me?' and he actually gets out of the car," Suffolk County Detective Sergeant Thomas Groneman said.

The mugger ordered Ferraro to hand over his wallet, calling the Bay Shore resident an "old man" and threatening to hit him with the tire iron, Groneman said.

Instead, Ferraro grabbed the bar, and the two fought, until the septaugenarian snatched away the tire iron, police said.

Groneman said Ferraro did "a good job" of disarming his would-be assailant, though he would not recommend that other people attempt such a brazen act of self-defense.

Now disarmed, the suspect ran to his car and attempted to drive away, police said. But the vehicle stalled, and the man got out of the car and fled on foot. Ferraro later helped police identify the suspect."

Tiny Chihuahua Saves Baby From Rattlesnake Bite

Now here's a great story of a brave little dog and one lucky little boy. The story comes courtesy of Yahoo! News -- "Zoey is a Chihuahua, but when a rattlesnake lunged at her owners' 1-year-old grandson, she was a real bulldog.

Booker West was splashing his hands in a birdbath in his grandparents' northern Colorado back yard when the snake slithered up to the toddler, rattled and struck. Five-pound Zoey jumped in the way and took the bites.

"She got in between Booker and the snake, and that's when I heard her yipe," said Monty Long, the boy's grandfather.

The dog required treatment and for a time it appeared she might not survive. Now she prances about."

Tiny Terrier Rescues 5 Children From Pit Bulls

This is a story of a brave little terrier named George who gave his life to save the lives of 5 children. Little George fought off two ferocious pit bulls who were intent on ripping the kids to shreds if not for the bravery of this little fellow.

From FoxNews.com - "The tragedy unfolded Sunday afternoon on New Zealand's North Island, in the town of Manaia, where a group of children — and George — were walking back from a trip to the candy store. Out of nowhere, the children told police, the two pit bulls lunged at them.

One of the kids, Richard Rosewarne, 11, told the local paper that George never backed down against the pit bulls, doggedly refusing to let the them get at his little brother, 4-year-old Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him — one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

It was too late, however, to save the little 9-year-old terrier. Steven Hopkinson, the veterinarian who treated George, said the dog's wounds were the worst he'd seen. Putting him down, Hopkinson said, was the only option.

Click here to read the full story of George's bravery. The word hero is thrown around a lot these days, but this little pup showed what true heroism and sacrifice is all about -- Giving one's life to save another...

President Bush's Visit to Enterprise Alabama

The email below was sent to me by a friend who lives in Enterprise, Alabama. It was written by someone in Enterprise. She is relaying a message told by an ABI officer who attends Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Enterprise. The officer was with President Bush when he visited.

--------

There is a man at Ridgecrest who is an ABI officer. He got up last night and told us about having the honor of being paired with one of the secret service men who were with President Bush Saturday in Enterprise. He said when they started walking through the rubble at the school they came upon four students waiting for the President.

They were in an area where on the floor there was a emblem that read EHS Class of 65. When the President approached the students he asked which one of you is the president (I assume president of the student body)? One of of the girls kind of raised her hand and said I am then she hung her head and started to cry. President Bush wrapped his arms around her and the other three joined them. Barry, the ABI officer said President Bush started to cry and said "It's tough being the president isn't it." Barry said he talked with them a little longer. He said he was very close to the President but couldn't hear every word that was spoken, but he could tell that the President was quoting scripture.

After a while the President started walking again and said he wanted the emblem preserved whatever it took. The Mayor then spoke up and said they would take care of it and President Bush turned to him and said "I was speaking to the President." I bet that the Mayor closed his mouth then!!! and then President Bush said "by the way where are my children"? The four students who were lagging behind came running up to him and walked the rest of the way over to the church with him. The media were sent to a different area Barry said. When President Bush got inside the church to meet with the families of those that had been killed the secret serviceman turned to Barry and said this is as far as we go. This is his time with them.

Barry then asked him if the President was protected and the secret servicemen said yes, he is protected, but not by us. Barry could hardly contain himself as he was telling us this last night. He said he told the secret service man that he wished everyone could witness what he just did, then they could see that the most powerful man in the United States was just another human being, a father, a comforter, a friend and had true compassion for these people. However the media does not portray that, big surprise! Of course I don't tell this story with the humility that Barry did because he was there, but I thought you might like to hear it.
