Hello everyone,
I hope you all are having a great day. I have a question. How do you feel about New Orleans holding Mardis Gras this year? Tomorrow, March 1st will be six months to the day that Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans (August 29, 2005).
I am curious how everyone feels. Personally, I think it is a positive step. New Orleans is world famous for it's Mardis Gras celebration, so for it to hold one at all, is a positive step in my opinion. And, the tourism dollars, albeit much less than in past years, will certainly help a city that is desperate for money. However, there has been a lot in the press about how the money and effort used to organize and plan Mardis Gras this year could have been used for other efforts. I am opening it up to debate. Use the comments link and tell me what you think.
I will say this. After watching the coverage of New Orleans after the hurricane hit, I was certain that Mardis Gras wouldn't happen. But, the city surprised me. I am not a big fan of Mayor Nagin nor the governor of Louisiana, but I am proud of the city for rebounding and putting it's best foot forward.

The most optimistic among a group of 545 Dutch men age 64 to 84 had a roughly 50 percent lower risk of cardiovascular death over 15 years of follow-up, according to the study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Previous research has suggested being optimistic boosts overall physical health and lowers the risk of death from all causes. A positive attitude also has been shown to help patients who suffer from heart disease caused by narrowed arteries."

When Your Hut's on Fire....
My mother forwarded this little story to me this past week. It struck a chord with me because there have been many times over the past few years when I feel as if my hut is on fire and everything seems to be lost. But, God always seems to surprise me when I find out why something really happened....
Here is the story:
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.
Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements, and to store his few possessions.
One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the worst had happened, and everything was lost.
He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger. He cried out, "God! How could you do this to me?" Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island!
It had come to rescue him! "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.
Moral of the Story:
It's easy to get discouraged when things are going bad or things have caused undue stress, but we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of our pain, suffering, or stress. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.

Autistic Teen Scores 20 in Basketball Game
Now this is the stuff that dreams are made of. Did you see this story? It is fantastic to read. The story comes from WTOPnews.com.
"Jason McElwain had done everything he was asked to do for the Greece Athena High School basketball team — keep the stats, run the clock, hand out water bottles.
That all changed last week for the team manager in the final home game of the season. The 17-year-old senior, who is autistic and usually sits on the bench in a white shirt and black tie, put on a uniform and entered the game with his team way ahead.
McElwain proceeded to hit six 3-point shots, finished with 20 points and was carried off the court on his teammates' shoulders.
"I ended my career on the right note," he told The Associated Press by phone Thursday. "I was really hotter than a pistol!"
He performed this amazing feat with only 4 minutes to go in the game!

Apolo Anton Ohno Wins Gold in His Last Race in Winter Olympics
From Yahoo! News -- "Leading from start to finish, Apolo Anton Ohno made this another Olympics to remember when he upset favored South Korean Ahn Hyun-soo to win the gold medal in 500-meter short track speedskating Saturday night."

Horse Rescues Owner Injured by Another Horse
Buddy to the rescue! Here is a video from CNN.com about a horse named Buddy who rescued his owner after she had been bucked off another horse. Not only did he help her our of the ring, but he also opened two doors with his mouth and waited with her while she called for help on the phone. It's a pretty cool story. Cool Runnings....Jamaican Wins Medal at Winter Olympics
Do you remember the movie Cool Runnings starring the late John Candy? It was a movie about a Jamaican bobsled team that goes to the Winter Olympics. Well, the Jamaican team may not have won a medal, but the first Jamaican now has.

You're Never Too Old for Dodgeball
Do you remember how fun dodgeball and kickball were when you were in elementary school? It seems that many adults are finding that the same ole' boring routine of going to the gym and riding a stationary bike or the stairmaster isn't cutting it anymore.
More and more adults are finding activities like gymnastics, dodgeball, kickball and other "fun" sports to get their physical fitness exercise. Here is an excerpt from an article on Yahoo! News:
"Whether reviving a childhood passion or following the leads of their own children, more adults are stepping off the sidelines onto gym mats, playing fields and ice rinks. Small-town instructors and national sports organizations report a spike in adult participation in sports generally dominated by kids.
"I used to go to the gym but it turned into a chore," said Daniel Lewis, a 26-year-old New York University law student who attended a recent gymnastics class with Lin at the Chelsea Piers recreation complex on Manhattan's Hudson River shore. "With gymnastics, you're getting great exercise and also learning real skills."
Chelsea Piers' 25,000-square-foot gymnastics facility advertises the largest adult gymnastics program in the country, attracting both first-timers and professionals. Classes are split nearly evenly between men and women, instructors said. Participants hail the sport's almost meditative effects, but the regulars' sharply defined muscles point up other benefits.
Other activities focus more on fun than physical discipline. The Seattle-based group Underdog Sports offers adult leagues for elementary-school staples - dodgeball, kickball and flag football.

Tapes Show Saddam's Son-in-Law Admitted WMD Deception
How much more proof has to come out before President Bush's critics will admit that they were wrong to accuse the President of lying about Weapons of Mass Destruction? Maybe this article and story will be the end of it. The story is from ABCNews. Saddam Hussein's son-in-law, who was in control of Iraq's weapons program, admitted on tape that they had Weapons of Mass Destruction and they deliberately hid the information from the U.N. and America.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
This is Saddams' son-in-law speaking to Saddam:
"I go back to the question of whether we should reveal everything or continue to be silent. Sir, since the meeting has taken this direction, I would say it is in our interest not to reveal. Not just out of fear of disclosing the technology we achieved, or to hide it for future work. No. The game has gone on for too long. And now it has become clear to many officials of countries that are coerced to work with America…"
Earlier in the article, here is another quote from him:
"Not the type of the weapons, not the volume of the materials we imported, not the volume of the production we told them about, not the volume of use. None of this was correct. They don't know any of this. We did not say we used them on Iran. We did not reveal the volume of the chemical weapons that we had produced. We did not reveal the type of the chemical weapons. We did not reveal the truth about the volume of the imported materials."
It makes me sick that evidence like this is completely ignored by critics of President Bush. Whether you like him or not, facts are facts. Saddam used chemical weapons against his own people. That is a fact. He would have used them against Israel, the U.S. or any other country he didn't like if he had been given the opportunity.

Seth Wescott Wins Gold Medal and Other News Stories
Good morning and Happy Friday to you! Here are some of the stories making headlines today:
- Did you see Seth Wescott win the Gold medal in Snowboard Cross last night at the Olympics? I love snowboarding, so this was an exciting event to watch. Read more about Seth's win on NBCOlympics.com.
- I am not a huge figure skating fan, but my wife is a wonderful figure skater, so I have learned more about the sport and watched the men's final last night. What I was impressed with was the struggles and sacrifices that the men's gold medal winner, Yevgney Plushenko, has endured to ascend to the upper eschelon of his sport. If you haven't heard his story, it's impressive. At a very young age, he moved from his small home near Siberia to St. Petersburg and started training with the world renowned coach, Aleksei Mishin. He had to leave his family behind, but always vowed he would make them proud and win the gold medal. He has now done just that. Click here to read more about his life.
- I knew firefighters had to do a variety of jobs like fighting fires, rescuing cats stuck in trees, but how about this one... Rescuing a Valentine stuck in a tree! This is a heartwarming story about a young boy who sent up a Valentine in a balloon in honor of his mother who died from cancer. Unfortunately, the balloon became entangled in a tree. - Tiger Woods opened a new $11 million, 35,000-square-foot learning facility near Anaheim, California this week. He donated $5 million dollars of his own money to the project. Rufus the Bull Terrier Wins Best in Show
Talk about a face only a mother can love.... Check out Rufus the Bull Terrier! He won best of show at the Westminster Dog Show last night. Rufus' biggest selling point was his head was perfectly shaped like an egg. Apparently, that is good for bull terriers. As the article from ABCNews.com says, "Rufus' selling point? His head perfectly shaped like an egg.
"The classic profile of a colored bull terrier," judge James Reynolds said.
Rufus was the first dog in his breed to win at the nation's most prestigious show. Handler Kathy Kirk said she was "ready to pass out" from the pressure, but her nearly 6-year-old dog that she playfully calls "Puppyhead" seemed to take it all in stride.

Sago Mine Survivor Learning to Speak Again
From Yahoo! News -- "The survivor of the Sago Mine disaster is slowly learning to speak again, answering questions and learning to articulate words at a rehabilitation hospital, a family spokeswoman said Wednesday."
"Randal L. McCloy Jr., 26, sometimes responds with a single word, but also uses phrases to answer relatives and therapists, said Aly Goodwin Gregg, a spokeswoman for McCloy's family. Some of his communication is clear, but much is still difficult to understand.
"His family is ecstatic with what's coming now," Gregg said. "It's wonderful to say, 'Do you want more chicken fingers?' and for him to be able to say no."

Where Did Valentine's Day Come From?
Wondering how Valentine's Day came about? HappyNews.com has a great article about the history of Valentine's Day. Here are some of the highlights from the article:

Italian being referred to as a Romance language, the holiday is credited to none other than St. Valentine, the patron saint of amore.' "Emperor Claudius II (not a very nice person), whose reign lasted from approximately 268-270 A.D., historians theorize, banned marriage completely. A Roman priest named Valentine thought the Emperor's decree unjust and just plain mean. In spite of all this, Valentine continued to marry couples in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
While in jail waiting to be put to death, a young girl came to visit him regularly. Valentine was quite taken with her, and she turned out to be the jailor's daughter. He did not get to see her one last time before he met the grim reaper, but he did write her a letter and signed it, "From your Valentine".

The Incredible Hulk - A Sheriff's Deputy

How about this story from USAToday.com -- "The Incredible Hulk is now a county sheriff's department reserve deputy. Lou Ferrigno, 54, who played the green-skinned monster on the CBS TV show from 1977 to 1982, was sworn in during a ceremony Monday night.
"My father was a police officer with the New York Police Department; I've always had a high respect for officers," Ferrigno told The Associated Press. "I want to give back to the community, and I want to work with young kids, help them get off drugs."

I ran across a book review today while browsing NewsMax.com. If you aren't familiar with NewsMax.com, you might want to check it out. Even if you aren't a Republican, you still might enjoy many of the articles.
The review I ran into today was for a book by Richard Gaylord Briley called "Pray and Grow Rich." I have not read the book yet myself, but after reading the review, I think I may purchase it. Need a Pick Me Up?
This is my dog Biscuit. Anytime I am feeling a little down and out, one look at Biscuit will immediately put a smile on my face. If you don't have a dog, I would encourage you to get one. Chase Your Passion, Not Your Pension
Today, I'd like to share a quote I gathered from the customer service seminar I went to yesterday. The quote is from Edward James Olmos. If you don't know who he is, he played Lt. Martin Castillo on Miami Vice opposite Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. He was also in a great movie from 1988 titled Stand and Deliver. If you've never seen it, you need to watch it. It's an inspirational film.

Kitten Goes Undercover in Vet Scam Probe

Authorities on Wednesday introduced the 8-month-old former stray cat that posed as a would-be patient while police investigated a college student accused of treating pets without a license.
At a news conference, Fred sported a tiny badge on his collar as he posed for photos with owner Carol Moran, a prosecutor.

Customer Service - Where did it go?
I attended a seminar yesterday on Customer Service. My expectations were that it would be filled with tips to help employees become better at providing customer service. My expectations were blown away. The gentleman who led the seminar was fantastic. I thought I would share one of the topics covered during the seminar as it applies to everyone no matter what you do for a living.
One section from the seminar was titled, "Quality Customer Service is ATTITUDE". Whatever you do, do it with a positive attitude. If you don't enjoy what it is you do, then do something else. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Life is too short to be miserable at a job you hate.
Think of it this way, let's say you start working at the age of 22 and retire at the age of 65. That's 43 years working. During that time, even if you take 2 weeks off a year for vacation, you still will work 10,578 days as opposed to having 4,482 days off, which includes 2 weeks a year vacation and weekend days. That means you will work 58% of your life for 43 years! Why in the world would you spend over half of your life doing something you hate?
The speaker related the following story to illustrate how you can enjoy anything with the right attitude. He is from a small town in south Georgia. At a local barbecue restaurant where he frequently goes with his wife and granddaughter, the same man worked as a volunteer greeter for years. Every time he walked in the restaurant with his granddaughter, the greeter always greeted them in an enthusiastic way and always remembered his granddaughters name. This really delighted his granddaughter.
Recently, the man passed away. By the world's standards, this man was a nobody. All he did was enthusiastically greet people at the door of a barbecue restaurant. However, at his funeral, a huge line of Georgia State Patrol cars were lined up and leading the funeral progression. The reason... The restaurant was a frequent stop for the patrolmen while on duty. He touched their lives so much that they all wanted to be there at his funeral.
In short, Customer Service is being nice to people and treating them the way you would want to be treated. Sound familiar?

Bosnian Ski Resort Helps Heal War Wounds
Remember the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984? I was only 14 years old, but I remember them. It's hard to believe that just a few short years after the Olympics, the area was devastated by the Bosnian War.
An article today from WashingtonPost.com shows how the resort is helping heal those old war wounds. Here are some excerpts from the article:
"In 1984, this ski resort hosted some of the world's top athletes at the Sarajevo Olympics. Just a few years later, notorious war commanders and their troops took shelter here, turning a symbol of harmony into one of ethnic hatred. Today, as another Winter Olympics begins this week in nearby Italy, Jahorina's ski slopes are slowly becoming trails to reconciliation as skiers from all countries of the former Yugoslavia come to ski and put the past behind.
At bars and cafes, Slavic Muslims, Croats, Serbs, Slovenes, Macedonians sit next to one another and sip tea or the traditional Bosnian plum brandy, sljivovica."
"Drinking tea at a bar, Dzenan Hadzic, a 43-year-old Bosnian Muslim, talked about the changing mood on the slopes.
"When the war ended I thought I would never again come to Jahorina and ski here. I was afraid that someone might attack me because I am Muslim and to be honest I did not want to come here and spend my money in Serb territory," he said.

Remembering Coretta Scott King - The First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement
The world said goodbye today to Coretta Scott King, the late widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There were numerous news agencies covering the proceedings today, and I thought I would share some of the different perspectives written about Mrs. King. Most news stories chose to focus on the positives of her life and the movement she helped spawn. She was a lady of great class and will be sorely missed.

Enlarge Your Vision
As I mentioned in a post from last year, I am a big fan of Joel Osteen. I think he is a great motivational speaker who happens to be a pastor. His book, Live Your Best Life Now, is divided up into seven steps. On my way into work today, I was listening to the first CD from the audio book, which talks about the first step to living your best life now. It's called Enlarging Your Vision.
What does this mean? Quite simply, it means you need to step out of your comfort zone and dream big. One way Joel puts it is, "If you can't conceive it on the inside, you'll never receive it on the outside." We've all heard friends or family say something like, "I can't do that... Or, that'll never happen to me." You know what, it won't. If you don't believe it can happen, it won't. But, if you believe it can and will happen, it will. It might not happen right away, but God has a way of rewarding those who believe in themselves and trust in him.

Go Seahawks!
Today's the big day. Super Bowl Sunday! I hope you all enjoy the game and be careful. Don't drink and drive, and if you do have too much to drink, make sure to have a friend take you home or call a cab.
I hope the game is a good one and not a blowout by either team. But, I do hope the Seattle Seahawks win the game. It's their first Super Bowl in the team's history, and having graduated from the University of Alabama, I am a huge Shaun Alexander fan. If you didn't know, Shaun led the league in regular season total rushing yards and he led the league in total touchdowns.
What's even more impressive about Shaun is his foundation, the Shaun Alexander Foundation. The foundation's mission is to "empower young men through education, athletics, character programs, and leadership training; inspiring them to reach their full potential as the mentors and role models for the next generation."

Don't Throw it Away... Freecycle it!
I found a website this morning that has found a way to give back to the community while helping people rid their homes of unwanted junk. Freecycle.org's mission statement is "To build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community."
Here's how it works, "When you want to find a new home for something -- whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door -- you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle group.
Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself. Simply respond to a member's offer, and you just might get it. After that, it's up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and to set up a pickup time for passing on the treasure.
Their main rule: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages."
It's sort of like a garage sale online except everything is free. So, go ahead and join and get rid of something that has been clogging up your garage for years. It may be junk to you, but it might be a treasure to someone else.

Bubba Watson - The Longest Driver on the PGA Tour
Who is Bubba Watson? He is being called the "new-age" redneck of the PGA Tour. Why am I writing about him? For a number of reasons.
I am originally from a smaller city in Southeast Alabama called Dothan. Bubba is from Bagdad, Florida, which isn't that far from Dothan. Bagdad is on the Florida Panhandle. For a country boy from Milton, Florida to have made it all the way up to the ranks of the PGA Tour is pretty impressive. What is even more strange about a guy named Bubba from the South is he doesn't like NASCAR and he doesn't like to fish, hunt or drink. That is why he calls himself a "new-age" redneck.
The reason I am writing about him today is because he has taken the PGA Tour by storm this year. At the Sony Open in Hawaii a few weeks ago, he hit a drive a 398 yards! That is enormous. And, he regularly hits it 330+ yards...
I like him because he's out there having fun. Something that seems to be lacking from many of the pros at the top level. He just wants to "grip it and rip it". It's refreshing to see. Keep an eye on him this year. I hope he continues to do well in tournaments, and if nothing else, he'll make for great highlights on the Golf Channel.
If you're wondering why I wrote this article today.... It's because life is meant to be lived. Whatever you do, do it with passion and have fun. If you don't like what you are doing and you aren't having fun doing it, then maybe you should look for something else to do. Or, better yet, learn to love what you are doing right now. Everything can be fun with the right attitude!

I am originally from a smaller city in Southeast Alabama called Dothan. Bubba is from Bagdad, Florida, which isn't that far from Dothan. Bagdad is on the Florida Panhandle. For a country boy from Milton, Florida to have made it all the way up to the ranks of the PGA Tour is pretty impressive. What is even more strange about a guy named Bubba from the South is he doesn't like NASCAR and he doesn't like to fish, hunt or drink. That is why he calls himself a "new-age" redneck.

Mixed-Breed Rescued Dog Wins Online Show
From ABCNews.com -- A dachshund-cocker mix named Tillie that was rescued by a no-kill shelter last year in California won best of show Monday in an online competition in which 45,000 people voted.
Using the Internet allowed the show to reach the masses, while a new category was created to recognize dogs that are not included in traditional dog shows.
Tillie seemed unimpressed, but her owner and Purina's award presenter were excited on the stage of Purina's headquarters here. Tillie and Julie George of the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles arrived by limousine and a red-carpet walkway.
"This is a classic Cinderella story," said the tuxedoed Ernie Planck, as he draped a medal and ribbon around Tillie's tiny neck. "She's a mixed-breed rescue dog selected from 15,000 entries. She is America's dog."

Sailors Rescued From Ship After Collision
From WashingtonPost.com -- A chemical tanker and cargo ship collided in the English Channel early Tuesday, setting off a pre-dawn rescue of 22 sailors by helicopter and lifeboat.
The tanker, which was carrying phosphoric acid, collided with a cargo ship at about 2:20 a.m. about 30 miles northwest of the Channel island of Guernsey, Britain's Maritime and Coast Guard Agency said.
French officials said all the rescued sailors were from the chemical tanker Ece, which was taking in water and listing in rough seas.
British Coast Guard spokesman Fred Caygill said 12 were rescued by coast guard helicopter and 10 by a lifeboat from Guernsey. All were believed to be receiving treatment for minor injuries, he said. To continue reading this story, go to WashingtonPost.com.
