Golf Tournament To Support The Lilli Grace Memorial Foundation

I received an email from a reader (Thanks Eddie!) of PositivePelham.com the other day. He's going to be participating in a golf tournament to raise funds for a very, very worthy cause. I'm going to let him tell you what it's all about. Here is his email:

Won’t you help me honor Lilli’s legacy?

Lilli Grace Register was born through the miracle of research and technology. This miracle allowed her father, who fought two previous episodes with cancer (Hodgkins Disease Lymphoma), to actually conceive a child with his wife. Lilli Grace, who truly lived up to her name, was filled with great joy and had a smile that would light up a room. After only a short 18 months, this special child was tragically killed in an accident and I am asking for your help in continuing her legacy.

On April 21st, I will be participating in a significant and meaningful golf tournament as part of The Lilli Grace Memorial Foundation fund raising efforts. The Foundation provides support to many organizations leading the way in cancer awareness and child safety in the home. It is a proud supporter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (through Team in Training), the The Two-Day Breast Cancer Walk and www.kidsandcars.org ..

My request is simple and straightforward. Would you consider sponsoring me to help these wonderful organizations continue in their much needed work? The easiest way is to simply visit www.lilligrace.com , click on the Donate button and make a SECURE donation using a major credit card through PayPal. When people come together in Grace, great things can be accomplished….. let’s help find ways to support and help those in need.
Thank you for making a difference!

Barack Obama Is A Distant Relative Of General Robert E. Lee

Researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society did a study on the three candidates for President, and there are some very interesting findings. Among them:

Obama has a prolific presidential lineage that features Democrats and Republicans. His distant cousins include President George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman and James Madison. Other Obama cousins include Vice President Dick Cheney, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and Civil War General Robert E. Lee, and he's also related to Brad Pitt. I'll give him credit, that's a pretty impressive blood line...

Clinton, who is of French-Canadian descent on her mother's side, is a distant cousin of singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette and actress Angelina Jolie. She's also
distant cousins with beatnik author Jack Kerouac and Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles of England.

McCain, whose lineage was harder to trace because of poor record-keeping is a sixth cousin of first lady Laura Bush.

Atlanta's Saving Grace During Friday Night's Tornado - The University of Alabama

What do I mean by the title of this post? Unless you've been on another planet, you're probably familiar with the havoc that a tornado caused in downtown Atlanta this past Friday night.

What you may not realize is that one University of Alabama basketball player should be considered a hero. His name is Mykal Riley, and he is the player who made a last second three-point shot to send the Alabama vs. Mississippi State basketball game into overtime during the SEC Basketball Tournament being held at the Georgia Dome. Had Mykal missed the shot, thousands of fans would have been outside on the streets in downtown Atlanta when the tornado hit rather than inside the dome.

One never knows what would have happened if he'd missed the shot, but I'll say this, everyone who was in attendance at that game should probably send Mykal a thank you note, because he just might have saved thousands of lives.

If you missed the footage of the tornado during the game, here's live footage of the game as the tornado roared past the dome.

Hero Dog Bitten By Snake And Almost Loses His Life

From Australia's the Herald Sun -- Once again, a dog steps in to save the day. Roary, the Staffordshire bull terrier pictured to the left, stepped in front of his owner's little three-year old who was about to be bitten by a poisonous brown snake.

Roary almost died, but his owner managed to get him to the vet in time to save his life (even stopping to blow air into his nose along the way to the vet).

The pup is doing just fine now, and all is well. To read the entire story of how Roary saved the day, please go to this page on the Herald Sun's website.

101-Year-Old Man Plans to Run Marathon

From Gimundo.com - Wow, the next time I complain about going to the gym, I'll remember this guy.

At one hundred and one years of age, Buster Martin sports a bushy white beard, and more than a few wrinkles. But while most men of his age would content themselves with afternoon naps, Early Bird dinners, and the occasional game of Bingo at the nursing home, Martin has considerably more on his plate.

The former Army physical trainer has just entered the London Marathon, a grueling 42.195 km (26 miles and 385 yards) annual event, and one of the world's top international races. Martin's goal may sound like wishful thinking, but don't be so sure: He recently completed a half-marathon in a little over five hours – not bad at all for an athlete who could be the grandfather of most of his competitors (and he just might be - the man has 17 children!).

That's impressive to say the least. To read the entire story, please go to this page on Gimundo.com.

14-Year Old Starts "No Cussing Club"

I was eating lunch the other day at a restaurant, and I was sitting in a booth adjacent to a group of teenagers who looked to be around 14 or 15 years old. I was startled when I kept over-hearing them repeatedly use profanity. It shouldn't have come as a surprise to me considering most of today's teenagers' role models from TV and music routinely use profanity every chance they get.

That's why this video I saw today was so encouraging. A 14-year old from California started a "No Cussing Club" about a year ago, and it has now spread to his entire town, where the mayor has declared a "No Cussing Week". What a great story. One of my favorite quotes from this interview is when the host asks the boy why he thinks teenagers, and adults for that matter, shouldn't cuss. His response, "Well, first of all, it makes you sound really unintelligent and it just lessons you." Well said.

If you're prone to cussing on a regular basis, why not give it a try. Try not cussing for a day and see how you feel.

After 52 Days In The Cold, Beloved Dog Is On The Mend

From the Detroit Free Press -- One of my readers (Thanks Missy) sent this story to me this morning. It's a great story to follow up the earlier story about Nubs the Dog.

Mr. Joe disappeared from his owners home on New Year's Eve, and was found 52 days later in a neighbor's barn. The poor little guy had lost half his body weight and was almost dead. Luckily though, Mr. Joe has just returned to his owner's home and is doing well.

Nubs The Dog Travels 70 Miles To Reunite With Soldier In Iraq

This has to be one of the best stories I've heard out of Iraq in quite some time. A Marine named Major Dennis rescued a dog in Iraq who had been severely mistreated (his ears had been cut off and he had been stabbed with a screw driver by his Iraqi owners). Major Dennis nursed him back to health as best he could, but his troop was ordered to leave the area where they were, and they couldn't take Nubs with them. (He named him Nubs because of his ears.)

They traveled 70 miles away through the desert, and miraculously, Nubs found them. By the time Nubs found them, he was in bad shape again having traveled 70 miles in very treacherous terrain.

This time, Major Dennis knew he had to get Nubs out of Iraq. He started an email campaign and raised over $3,000 to get Nubs out of Iraq and to San Diego to stay with some friends until he can be reunited with him when he returns from Iraq himself. Nubs is supposed to be landing here in the U.S. any day now. I'll keep you updated as soon as I know he's here.

Here's the remarkable story.

Eight Ways Money Can Buy You Happiness

From Gimundo.com -- We've all heard the saying, "Money can't by you happiness", but Gretchen Rubin from The Happiness Project thinks it can. Here are eight ways money can help buy happiness: (For details on each way, visit this page on Gimundo.com)
  1. Strengthen bonds with family and friends - Buy a plane ticket for a relative or friend to visit you
  2. End marital conflict - If the dirty garage is always a source of spousal frustration, hire a neighborhood teenager to clean it for you
  3. Upgrade your exercise - Everyone can benefit from exercise
  4. Think about fun - Rather than buying stuff, go do stuff you like to do
  5. Serenity and Security - Speaks for itself
  6. Pay more for healthy food - Self-explanatory
  7. Spend the money on someone else - This will make you feel better than any of the other ways...
  8. Think about YOUR priorities - What have you avoided doing for years because you didn't have the money. Do it now.
For more details on each step, please visit this page on Gimundo.com

German Jet Narrowly Avoids Crashing On The Runway

This was almost a very negative and sad story, but thanks to the grace of God and a very skilled pilot, this jet narrowly escaped disaster as it was trying to land in gale force winds. It managed to land safely on the second attempt. Check out the right wing that scrapes against the ground at one point.

Jolie Sees Benefit in US Surge in Iraq

It's not often that you see positive articles from celebrities about Iraq, but this article from Yahoo.com is just that.

According to the article, In an op-ed piece published by the Washington Post, titled "A Reason to Stay in Iraq," Jolie details the plight of refugees and says their conditions have not improved since she visited the country last August to urge governments to provide more support.

Later in the article, "When I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq," she wrote. "They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible."
