Phone Salesman Paul Potts Amazes The Judges and The Crowd On Britain's Got Talent

Earlier this summer, an unknown phone salesman named Paul Potts stepped up on stage in front of Simon Cowell and two other judges on the British reality show, Britain's Got Talent, and he completely blew everyone's mind with his performance. I love the look on the judges faces when he first walks up and tells them he is going to sing opera. Their facial transformations during his performance is priceless. Paul would go on to win the competition.

You may remember this little girl's performance from the same competition. She was one of the finalists, and her performance was equally impressive. His performance should teach us all that everyone has a talent, and we should never judge a "book by it's cover." Enjoy!

12 Tips To Help You Remain Young

The Blaylock Wellness Report featured 12 tips to help you remain young. I received these tips via email the other day.
  1. Avoid processed foods and eat only freshly prepared meals.
  2. Eat five to 10 servings of fresh vegetables and some fruits every day.
  3. Avoid Omega-6 oils (found in corn, safflower, sunflower, peanut, soybean and canola oils). You should not cook with these oils, nor should you use products that contain them (chips, breads, pastries, etc.).
  4. Consume at least two ounces of extra-virgin olive oil a day.
  5. Take Omega-3 oil supplements and foods enhanced with this healthy fat. This includes Christopher eggs and other egg brands that contain Omega-3. These supplements should not be in gelatin capsules. Get the liquid form of highly purified fish oil.
  6. Avoid sugar. Sucrose, the sugar used in foods and as a sweetener, causes a greater insulin surge than glucose, the natural form.
  7. Eat complex carbohydrates that are low on the glycemic index. These include broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, onions and more.
  8. Drink a combination of white tea mixed with rosemary tea. These teas contain powerful antioxidants and have been shown to especially protect the brain against abnormal aging.
  9. If you have amalgam (silver) fillings, find a dentist specially trained in their safe removal and have them taken out and replaced with ceramics.
  10. Avoid continuous stress. Unrelieved stress greatly increases free-radical production and lipid peroxidation in the brain, causing it to age abnormally and rapidly. Make sure you get at least eight hours of sleep a night.
  11. Avoid depression. If you become depressed, seek treatment early. A number of studies have shown that depression causes a loss of memory and learning difficulties, and that over time the hippocampus of the brain (the memory and learning center) actually shrinks.
  12. Once a week, you should fast at least until dinner. Fasting once a week has been shown to dramatically slow brain aging and accelerate repair of this essential organ.
There you have it. 12 tips that might help you live longer and remain young. For more about the Blaylock Wellness Report, visit BlaylockReport.com.

Good luck and make it a great day!

Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams by Randy Pausch

Randy Pausch is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He has terminal pancreatic cancer and has been told he only has 3 - 6 months left to live. He gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007. In his moving lecture, he talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

There are two videos here. The first one is about ten minutes long, and gives a great lesson about overcoming obstacles. The second video is his entire lecture, which is over an hour long, and I would recommend taking the time to watch the entire lecture at some point. You'll be moved...

Make it a great day!

Daisy The Dog Finds A "Mammoth" Bone

Talk about doggie heaven... This little dachshund named Daisy found this eight pound bone that archaeologists say was part of a thigh bone of a wolly mammoth, which has been extinct for over 2 million years.

Unfortunately, Daisy wasn't able to feast on her find, but that's probably a good thing since the bone wouldn't have tasted very good.

To read more about Daisy and her "mammoth" find, go to this page on the Daily Mail.

Good luck and make it a great day!

Five Ways You Can Help Save Animals' Lives

Gimundo.com has a great little article about five ways you can help save the lives of animals. Here are the five ways:

Adopt from a shelter.
This is a no-brainer, but there are still thousands of pets who are put to sleep in shelters around the country on a daily basis. Before you call or visit a breeder, visit your local shelter and give some lucky pet a second chance at life. They'll definitely return the favor... PetFinder.com is a good place to start looking for a pet to adopt if you aren't sure where your local animal shelter is located.

Foster.
I love this concept. A good friend of mine was fostering a Weimaraner, and they are now going to adopt it.

Volunteer at a shelter.
Self-explanatory - If you can't adopt or foster a pet, then the next best thing is to volunteer at your local shelter.

Spay or neuter your pets.
Without a doubt, this is one of the most important things you can do as a pet owner to help control the pet population.

Donate to an animal welfare organization.
These organizations can't operate without money. Let's do our part and keep them in business.

What Do You Want To Do With Your Life? How About 43 Things...

Strange title to a post, huh? Bare with me because there's a reason. I found a website this morning that I think is pretty cool. It's called 43Things.com. It's a social networking website with a good purpose. What can you do on the site?

It's pretty simple really. You list 43 things that you want to do with your life. If you're stuck and can't think of all 43 things, then you can take a look at what others want to do and maybe add one of there things to your list. If you've already done something that someone else wants to do, you can share your story with them and the world. It's a neat site that I think you'll enjoy. Until tomorrow...

Good luck and make it a great day!

Remembering My Grandmother Two Years Later

My grandmother passed away two years ago today. It's hard to believe she's been gone that long. It seems like just yesterday I was sitting on one of the old bar stools in her kitchen watching her make a huge dinner for everyone.

I was reading a post I made about her over a year ago and thought I'd share it with you again since there are so many new readers to the blog. She was a special woman and someone I miss tremendously: (This is an excerpt from a post made on Saturday, December 31, 2005)

--

Person of the Year -- My grandmother -- My grandmother passed away a few months ago. She was a wonderful person and a true friend to everyone she met. She lived in a small town in Alabama called Geneva. During her life, she had many obstacles to overcome, but she always overcame them, and became a better person because of them. To mention a few:
  • When she was in the prime of her life, she was hit by a train when her car became stuck on a railroad track. Her entire lower body was crushed and broken. It took her a long time, but she eventually walked again even though the doctors told everyone she would probably never walk again.
  • Her husband (my grandfather and one of the greatest men I've ever known) died of Parkinson's disease after a long and grueling 7-8 years of suffering. During this time, my grandmother stood right by his side and took care of his every needs. She put his needs ahead of her own. When he was in the hospital on his deathbed, he didn't die until he heard my grandmother say, "It's okay for you to go. I'll be okay." He then relaxed and passed away knowing she was going to be okay. She took care of him and he left this world knowing she was going to be okay.
  • After my grandfather's passing, she mourned for a short time, but then she surprised us all by becoming extremely active with her senior citizens club. She traveled around the country with them seeing sights and places she had never been to. She really made the best of the rest of her life. I was so impressed, because many people like her who had been so dependent and attached to a loved one usually withdraw into depression and have a really hard time adjusting to life without their spouse. She lived life to it's fullest and was fond of saying to me, "I'm just happy to have another day to live. I'm going to enjoy it." Something we all should say every morning!
  • But, during this time of her life, the unthinkable happened. One of her two sons, my uncle Troyce, was killed in a freak accident in his early 50's. He was barbecuing on his back porch when the propane tank exploded and he was killed. This was horrible for us all. Uncle Troyce was so fun to be around. He had a joy for life like no other. This was devastating to my grandmother, but she managed to move on knowing Troyce was now in heaven with his father.
  • Life certainly dealt her some bad breaks, but it was how she bounced back from the bad times that defined her life and legacy. She was truly an inspiring woman whom I deeply miss.
Good luck and make it a great day!

Jimmy V's Speech At The 1993 ESPY Awards

I came across this video earlier this morning, and I had to share it with you. I remember watching this live and it moved me back then. It still does. For those of you who aren't familiar with Jimmy V, his name is Jim Valvano, and he was a college basketball coach whose life was cut-short by cancer. But, he lived a great life. I emphasize - Live - He made the most of his time here, and he inspired millions of others to do the same. Enjoy and make it a great day!

Lose Pounds With Pears

The next time you're heading down the fruit aisle at the grocery story, stop by the pear section and pick up a few. According to this article from Health.com, pears are an excellent source of both Vitamin C and fiber. One pear contains 25% of the recommended daily allowance of fiber.

Why will this help you lose weight? Because fiber is bulky and gives you that full feeling. Therefore, one pear is usually enough to fill you up and thus you'll eat less and eventually lose more weight.

Good luck and make it a great day!
